Exit Code: 0 does not identify why Minecraft Java Edition stopped. Check the newest crash report and log, then test a fresh installation of the same Minecraft version in the official launcher. If that clean profile starts, compare it with the crashing profile—especially its mods, resolution, and JVM arguments. The log, not the number alone, should guide what you try next.
What Exit Code: 0 means—and what it does not
The displayed code is not enough to diagnose a Minecraft Java Edition crash. Forge’s support FAQ describes code 0 as a player selecting “Quit game” and the game closing successfully, but that is Forge forum guidance, not a universal explanation for every launcher dialog that displays Exit Code: 0. The code alone does not establish that the game shut down normally or identify a cause. Read the latest log or crash report for clues instead. Forge’s support FAQ
Find the newest crash report or log
First note your Minecraft version, operating system, launcher, mod loader, and when the failure occurs: before the menu, while loading a world, or during play. Reproduce the problem once, then inspect the newest available report or log; the latest files are the most relevant to that failure.
For a Forge profile in the official launcher
Forge’s FAQ points to the profile’s logs folder for debug.log and its crash-reports folder for crash reports. If those are missing, check launcher_log.txt in the profile folder or %AppData%.minecraft. File locations differ between launchers, so use the relevant launcher’s profile or game-directory settings if these paths do not apply. Forge support: common issues and solutions

When asking for help, share the relevant log or report and the version details above. Remove account credentials or tokens if they appear in a file; do not post them publicly.
Test a clean installation of the same version
Minecraft Help recommends making a new Java installation with the same game version as the profile that crashes. Keep the version constant so the comparison can tell you more than a test that changes several things at once. Use default settings and no added mods for this test. If the clean profile launches, the original profile’s downloaded mods or advanced settings become the next things to investigate. Minecraft Help specifically names resolution and JVM arguments as settings to check. Change one factor at a time where practical, then relaunch and see whether the failure returns.
If the clean profile also crashes, do not conclude that a particular component or setting is at fault from Exit Code: 0. Use the new failure’s log or crash report to choose what to investigate or include when contacting Minecraft support.

If only the modded profile crashes
Check each mod against both the Minecraft version and the mod loader in that profile. A mod made for another version or loader may not work in the current setup. Forge also recommends using separate game directories for modded versions so their saves, configurations, and mods do not interfere with vanilla or other modded installations. For a useful comparison, keep the Minecraft version the same and compare vanilla against modded, default against changed settings, and separate against shared game directories. The newest logs can show whether both profiles stop in the same way.

Check the Java runtime for your version
Java compatibility depends on the Minecraft and mod-loader versions; the newest Java installed on your computer is not automatically the right runtime for every profile. Forge’s FAQ gives these version-specific examples: Minecraft 1.20.6–1.21.11 with Java 21, and Minecraft 1.18–1.20.4 with Java 17. A graphics driver is one possible lead when the crash evidence points that way, but Exit Code: 0 by itself does not implicate the GPU. Oracle notes that many Windows cases involving a “Java Platform SE Binary has stopped working” message with Java 7 or 8 can be traced to a video-driver issue. In a separate Minecraft-specific example, Oracle says an hs_log_pid file containing a line beginning org.lwjgl.opengl can indicate a possible incompatibility between the video driver and LWJGL. These examples are scoped to particular symptoms and older Java versions; they do not prove that every Exit Code: 0 crash has a graphics cause. If your log points to a graphics or runtime problem, consult current driver guidance from your GPU or computer maker. Do not install a generic driver updater or buy hardware based only on the exit code.
