Yes, but the new development is not a multithreaded feature in vanilla Minecraft. PaperMC’s Folia is a separate fork of Paper that adds regionized multithreading to dedicated servers. It can tick independent parts of a world in parallel, but it is not a drop-in replacement for Paper and may not suit most servers.
What is Folia, and what changed?
PaperMC describes Folia as “a new fork of Paper that adds regionized multithreading to the server.” That means the headline refers to a server software project built on Paper—not an announcement that the standard vanilla Minecraft server has gained multithreading. PaperMC’s downloads page lists Folia 26.1.2 and experimental builds for 26.2; availability and stability depend on the build you choose. PaperMC downloads
How does Folia’s multithreading work?
Folia groups nearby loaded chunks into regions. Each region has its own tick loop, and separate regions can be ticked in parallel by a configurable thread pool. The design assigns region data to the thread ticking that region; threads cannot freely read or modify other regions’ data without risking unsafe access. PaperMC’s Folia overview
Regions also maintain their own tick schedules. PaperMC’s scheduling explanation says that, while the thread pool is not maximally utilized, regions whose ticks take no more than 50 milliseconds can maintain the 20 TPS target. This describes the conditions of the scheduler; it is not a benchmark or a promise that every Folia server will sustain 20 TPS. PaperMC’s region scheduling documentation

Who is Folia likely to help?
Folia’s strongest documented fit is a sizeable server where players are naturally spread across the world, such as a SkyBlock server or an SMP. Independent regions give the server work that can potentially run in parallel. If much of the load is concentrated in one area, or if the workload cannot be divided cleanly between regions, more threads do not automatically solve the bottleneck. PaperMC’s Folia FAQ
Paper versus Folia: what should server owners weigh?
| Decision factor | Paper | Folia |
|---|---|---|
| Tick execution | Traditional server ticking is centered on one main server thread. | Independent regions have separate tick loops that can run in parallel. |
| World and player layout | May be the more straightforward fit when the workload does not divide into independently ticking regions. | Best documented for sizeable servers with players spread across the world. |
| Plugin compatibility | Existing Paper plugins may work, subject to their own requirements. | Not a drop-in Paper replacement; many public plugins may break unless they support Folia’s ownership model. |
| Hardware | No Folia-specific core guidance applies. | PaperMC says Folia should ideally run on at least 16 physical cores, not 16 threads; this is project guidance, not a hard minimum. |
| Operations | Does not require Folia’s region-aware plugin and thread configuration. | Requires compatibility checks and tuning of available thread resources. |
PaperMC explicitly cautions that Folia will not suit most servers. Treat plugin compatibility as a first-order migration decision, not a minor setup detail. PaperMC’s Folia FAQ
What do plugins need to support?
Plugins must respect region and entity thread ownership. Code that assumes it can safely access data from any region on any thread can cause data corruption. Before migrating, confirm explicit Folia support for every plugin your server depends on; compatibility with Paper alone is not enough. PaperMC’s Folia overview
How much hardware and configuration does Folia need?
PaperMC recommends ideally having at least 16 cores—not 16 logical threads—but frames this as guidance rather than a minimum requirement. The FAQ’s rough thread-allocation starting point was informed by pre-release testing on a server that peaked at about 330 players. That player count describes the test context behind the estimates; it is not a capacity claim for other servers. PaperMC’s Folia FAQ

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
When allocating threads, PaperMC advises considering the total available cores and reserving capacity for networking, chunk I/O, chunk workers, garbage collection, plugins, and other server work. Its rough guidance is to keep total configured thread allocation below 80% of available CPUs, then tune against observed thread use. Neither that percentage nor the 16-core recommendation guarantees a particular performance improvement; actual results depend on the server’s workload and configuration. PaperMC’s Folia FAQ
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you switch from Paper to Folia?
- Check your workload: Folia is most compelling when a sizeable player base is spread among regions, rather than concentrated in one place.
- Audit every plugin: Confirm explicit Folia compatibility before migrating, especially for plugins that touch entities or world data.
- Check the build and hardware: Choose an appropriate Folia build and treat PaperMC’s core-count and allocation advice as a starting point for tuning, not a performance guarantee.
- Evaluate operations: Account for the added configuration and troubleshooting involved in running region-aware server software.
If plugin compatibility or workload separation is uncertain, Paper remains the more straightforward choice. Folia is a specialized option for server owners whose use case matches its regional design and who can validate their full plugin stack.
