It added the eerie Pale Garden biome, the watch-sensitive Creaking and its Creaking Heart, plus new wood, plants, and resin crafting materials. The Java release is version 1.21.4; the Bedrock release is 1.21.50.
What The Garden Awakens added
The update centers on exploring the Pale Garden and understanding how its hostile Creaking works. It also expands building and crafting with Pale Oak wood, moss, Eyeblossoms, and Resin. Minecraft’s December 3, 2024 release article describes the drop as playable in both editions and highlights Pale Oak boats, resin armor trim, and hanging moss as ways to use the new content.
What is the Pale Garden?
The Pale Garden is a variant of the Dark Forest biome. Its Pale Oak trees, Pale Moss, Pale Hanging Moss, and Eyeblossoms give it a distinct appearance and atmosphere. Java Edition’s 1.21.4 notes say that animal mobs do not spawn there naturally and that the biome has no accompanying music; those details are specific to the Java notes.
Eyeblossoms change with the time of day: they close during daytime and open at night, when they glow. In Java 1.21.4, open Eyeblossoms poison bees and make Suspicious Stew that causes Blindness; closed flowers make stew that causes Nausea.

How the Creaking and Creaking Heart work
The Creaking is a hostile mob tied to a Creaking Heart that can generate inside a Pale Oak. At night, a naturally generated Heart can spawn a Creaking. The mob freezes when a player looks at it and moves when the player looks away. As Sophie Austin put it in Minecraft’s December 3, 2024 release article, “The Creaking won’t move while you’re staring at it, but look away and it’s sure to follow.”
- Spot the Creaking. Its movement is governed by whether it is being watched, so keep it in sight while you assess the area.
- Trace its particles. When attacked, the Creaking emits a particle trail pointing toward its linked Heart. Follow that trail to find the source.
- Destroy the Heart. Destroying the linked Creaking Heart removes the Creaking.
These behaviors are described in the Java Edition 1.21.4 notes. They also specify activation within 12 blocks and continued activity while a player remains within 32 blocks. Treat those ranges as Java 1.21.4 mechanics, not as a blanket statement about every edition or later version.

Together, these give players new decorative blocks and crafting options. Minecraft’s release article also calls out Pale Oak boats, resin armor trim, and hanging moss for decoration.

What happened to the announced community challenges?
Minecraft’s Garden Awakens feature page announced collective targets of placing 50 million Resin blocks and defeating 75 million Creakings. It described Bedrock rewards as the Creak emote and Creaking mask, and Java rewards as one skin for each completed challenge. These were announced event goals and rewards, not evidence that a challenge is active now or that either target was completed.
