Google DeepMind-affiliated researchers reported that Dreamer learned to collect a diamond in a Minecraft benchmark without human gameplay demonstrations or a task-specific curriculum. But “without training” is misleading if taken literally: Dreamer learned through reinforcement learning while interacting with the game environment. It found a diamond; it did not complete Minecraft or do so spontaneously.
What Dreamer achieved in Minecraft
In a 2025 Nature paper, Danijar Hafner, Jurgis Pasukonis, Jimmy Ba and Timothy Lillicrap describe Dreamer, the third generation of an algorithm designed to learn control tasks using a model of its environment. In the Minecraft Diamond benchmark, the agent had to earn a sequence of 12 item milestones, beginning with a log and ending with a diamond.
The researchers report that Dreamer completed the sequence from sparse rewards using default hyperparameters, without human gameplay data or an adaptive, task-specific curriculum. Every trained Dreamer agent discovered a diamond within 100 million environment steps. The comparison agents reached advanced items such as the iron pickaxe but did not find a diamond.
The paper’s broader evaluation covers more than 150 tasks; that figure refers to the paper’s overall task set, not to Minecraft tasks. The authors call Dreamer, to their knowledge, the first algorithm to collect diamonds in Minecraft from scratch without human data or curricula.

How Dreamer learned
Dreamer has three neural-network components that train concurrently from replayed experience as the agent interacts with an environment:
- World model: predicts possible outcomes of actions, giving the agent a learned model of its surroundings.
- Critic: estimates the value of possible outcomes.
- Actor: selects actions based on what the agent has learned.
As the authors put it, “Dreamer learns a model of the environment and improves its behaviour by imagining future scenarios.” In this experiment, that learning loop included interaction with Minecraft. The agent’s future-scenario imagination helped it improve, but it was not training solely in imagination from the outset.

What “without training” leaves out
The headline shorthand means “without human demonstrations or a task-specific curriculum,” not “without machine learning.” Dreamer received reinforcement learning from its own environment interactions. The result shows that an agent could learn a difficult, long sequence of actions from sparse rewards under the reported setup—not that an unprepared model could simply start the game and find a diamond.
The benchmark was a standardized version of Minecraft
The experiment used MineRL v0.4.4 with Minecraft 1.11.2. It provided abstract crafting actions, a flat categorical action space and accelerated block breaking. These choices make the task a research benchmark rather than an unmodified test of ordinary mouse-and-keyboard play.

- This LEGO Minecraft set includes a Steve Minecraft minifigure, bat, baby zombie and zombie figures, Kids can create their own adventure with accessories like a TNT toy, for hours of creative play
- Kids can build and rebuild this building toy for countless adventures with their favorite Minecraft figures, This set is one of the many available LEGO Minecraft toys for kids
- This set is the perfect Minecraft gift for any kid, Plus, LEGO Minecraft building sets are compatible with all LEGO building sets and LEGO building bricks for hours of imaginative play

Episodes could last up to 36,000 steps, corresponding to 30 minutes in the paper’s setup. The authors say experienced humans take about 20 minutes to obtain diamonds, but the human comparison and accelerated benchmark are not identical conditions.
Compute and reproducibility details
The paper reports that Dreamer used one GPU for nine days on the Minecraft task. The authors also note that the code used data augmentation and frame stacking for visual inputs—details not documented in the paper that they say were crucial to performance.

How this differs from other Minecraft AI results
Several prominent diamond-related results use materially different data, training methods or success measures. They should not be treated as repetitions of the same experiment.
| Work | Training data and interaction | Reported Minecraft result |
|---|---|---|
| Dreamer, Nature (2025) | Reinforcement learning through environment interaction; no human gameplay data or task-specific curriculum for the reported benchmark. | All trained agents found a diamond within 100 million environment steps in the MineRL-derived benchmark. |
| OpenAI Video PreTraining (2022) | Learned from a large collection of gameplay videos, using a smaller labeled contractor dataset to train an inverse dynamics model; the model was then fine-tuned with reinforcement learning. | OpenAI reported that the fine-tuned model crafted a diamond pickaxe in 2.5% of ten-minute Minecraft episodes. This is not Dreamer’s success rate or the same task metric. |
| Dreamer 4 preprint (2025) | Describes learning behaviors inside a learned world model from offline data, without environment interaction during that training. | Reports obtaining Minecraft diamonds. This is a separate preprint and training setup, not the interactive Dreamer experiment in the Nature paper. |
OpenAI’s result is described in its Video PreTraining announcement. The separate Dreamer 4 report, “Training Agents Inside of Scalable World Models,” is a 2025 arXiv preprint. Its claim about learning without environment interaction should not be retroactively applied to the Nature paper’s Dreamer result.

What the result does—and does not—show
- It shows: under the paper’s benchmark conditions, Dreamer could learn a long-horizon Minecraft objective from sparse rewards without human demonstrations or a task-specific curriculum.
- It does not show: that the AI was untrained, that it completed the whole game, or that it learned through ordinary unmodified keyboard-and-mouse play.
- It should not be conflated with: VPT’s video-based training and diamond-pickaxe metric, or Dreamer 4’s later offline, world-model training claim.
