It is not the full commercial game running unchanged: the inner world is a constrained recreation, with GIGAZINE reporting an 8 × 8 × 8 play space and 16 block types.
What is CHUNGUS II?
CHUNGUS II—also styled CHUNGUS2, short for “Computational Humongous Unconventional Number and Graphics Unit”—is a redstone computer created by Minecraft builder sammyuri. He worked with Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow to get a minimal Minecraft-like game running on it. The official Minecraft feature describes the machine and its collaborators; Hackaday’s 2023 coverage calls the inner game a stripped-down version.
The achievement is best understood as a computer built from Minecraft’s redstone components that runs a small game within the game—not as the original Minecraft executable being launched inside itself.
How does a redstone computer run a game?
Redstone circuits provide the logic from which CHUNGUS2’s virtual computer is assembled. The Minecraft feature describes a working CPU connected to RAM and graphics-processor components. Those parts process the inner game and produce its output on a 96 × 64-pixel screen.

Ordinary in-game redstone updates would make a complex machine slow to operate. The team used StackDoubleFlow’s Minecraft High Performance Redstone Server (MCHPRS) to accelerate redstone processing. Mojang’s feature says the server made the processes run “thousands of times” faster. GIGAZINE’s 2022 report gives a more specific figure—20,000 times faster—but that exact multiplier is secondary reporting, not the figure stated by Mojang.
What can you do in the inner Minecraft?
The inner game is intentionally limited rather than a complete copy of Minecraft. GIGAZINE reports an 8 × 8 × 8 block world with 16 block types. It also reports 8 KB of program memory, 256 B of extended RAM, 6 KB of graphics memory, and a PS4 controller for input. These additional specifications come from GIGAZINE’s account; the official Minecraft feature confirms the display resolution but does not provide the same full specification list.

- BUILD THE DREADED CREEPER – Young explorers, ages 10 and up, build a large poseable version of the iconic Minecraft mob
- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head
- HIDDEN SURPRISE INSIDE – Builders can remove the Creeper's head to reveal a compartment that hides a first-version Creeper minifigure and TNT element
- POSEABLE ROOM DECOR – After building, kids can put their creation on display in the bedroom or playroom
- GIFT IDEA FOR KIDS – Makes a wonderful birthday or any-time gift idea for boys and girls
That scale is part of the engineering point: the computer has to represent a game world, accept input, and draw the result using resources and logic implemented through Minecraft’s redstone system. The tiny world is a playable demonstration of the machine, not an attempt to reproduce every system in the commercial game.
How was CHUNGUS2 built?
Hackaday describes an assembler that turns a program into a ROM block made from Minecraft blocks, which can then be copied into the game world. That offers a glimpse of the software-to-world pipeline behind the project: code is translated into a form the redstone computer can use, rather than being run directly as an ordinary Minecraft mod.

The official feature credits sammyuri with creating CHUNGUS2 and says he teamed up with Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow to run Minecraft on it. GIGAZINE gives more specific role descriptions, identifying sammyuri with project leadership and computer/AMOGUS work, Uwerta with programming and graphics design, and StackDoubleFlow with MCHPRS. Those detailed divisions of work are GIGAZINE’s attribution.
Can you play it yourself?
Whether a working public copy is currently available is unconfirmed. A January 2025 thread on the Open Redstone Engineers forum describes attempts to find or restore the builds. Participants mentioned server warps, but the original poster reported missing output on one build and an apparently non-working Minecraft-in-Minecraft game. That discussion is a dated community account, not a definitive current status report; it does not establish that a functional download or server copy is available today.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can redstone builders learn from it?
Sammyuri says he developed his skills through experimentation, conversations with other builders, and studying earlier projects. The Minecraft feature names Mumbo Jumbo’s tutorials, QSmally’s QCPU, and Open Redstone Engineers among his inspirations. His advice is practical: start with small builds, prove an idea before scaling it up, and plan the design carefully before construction. As he puts it, “I gradually built more and more complex stuff until I was confident enough to embark on large projects like CHUNGUS2 and Minecraft in Minecraft.”
