A naturally spawned Creaking freezes when watched, but watching it does not defeat it: follow the particle trail revealed by an attack to find and destroy its linked Creaking Heart. These mechanics are documented for Java Edition 1.21.4; behavior may differ in other editions or versions.
What is the Creaking?
The Creaking is a hostile mob associated with the Pale Garden. It looks like a wooden figure and is built around an unnerving rule: a naturally spawned Creaking stands still while a nearby player watches it. Minecraft’s Garden Awakens overview describes it as “A tree-like mob, creakings will stand motionless when spotted by a player.”
That watch-and-freeze behavior makes looking at the mob a way to control its movement, not a way to harm it. In Java Edition 1.21.4, the release notes specify that it activates when a Survival or Adventure player within 12 blocks looks at it, remains active while such a player is within 32 blocks, and does not move while watched. In that watched state, it also has full knockback resistance. Its listed melee attack deals 3 damage points, or 1.5 hearts, and it is fire-resistant. How do you kill a naturally spawned Creaking?
Do not try to defeat a naturally spawned Creaking by repeatedly attacking the mob. Its linked Creaking Heart is the target: destroying the heart removes the Creaking connected to it.

- Keep the Creaking in view when you need to stop it moving. In Java Edition 1.21.4, looking at it activates the natural mob when you are within 12 blocks. It stays active while a Survival or Adventure player remains within 32 blocks.
- Hit the Creaking or have a pet hit it. An attack reveals a particle trail running between the Creaking and its Creaking Heart. The mob’s attack also causes the connected heart to produce 2–3 Resin Clumps, with a five-second cooldown after an attack, according to the Java 1.21.4 notes.
- Follow the trail to the heart and break it. Destroying that connected block removes the naturally spawned Creaking.
Attacking is useful for revealing the heart’s location, but it is not the finishing move. Resin Clumps can be smelted into Resin Bricks and used for armor trimming.
Where is the Creaking Heart?
Creaking Hearts can generate in Pale Oak trees in the Pale Garden. The Java Edition 1.21.4 notes say a heart can spawn a Creaking at night when positioned between two Pale Oak logs aligned along the same axis. The heart is active at night and dormant during the day, so a naturally spawned Creaking’s appearance is tied to that nighttime activity.

If you want to collect a heart rather than destroy it, the release notes say it can be obtained with a Silk Touch-enchanted tool. The particle trail is the practical clue when you are tracking the heart linked to a particular Creaking.
Natural and spawn-egg Creakings behave differently
The heart-based strategy applies to naturally spawned Creakings, not every mob with the same name. In Java Edition 1.21.4, a Creaking created with a Spawn Egg is not linked to a heart, persists through day and night, can take damage, and has one health point (half a heart). It therefore does not disappear by destroying a connected Creaking Heart.

What makes the Pale Garden unusual?
The Pale Garden is a variation of the Dark Forest biome. Its Pale Oak trees, Eyeblossoms, Pale Moss, and Pale Hanging Moss give it a distinctive pale look, while its quiet and sparse wildlife add to the intended eerie atmosphere.
- Pale Oak trees grow throughout the biome, and Creaking Hearts can generate within them.
- Eyeblossoms grow on the ground; Pale Moss and Pale Hanging Moss cover parts of the landscape and trees.
- Animal mobs do not naturally spawn in the biome, and it has no accompanying music, according to the Java Edition 1.21.4 notes.
