Complementary is a practical first pick if you want selectable visual styles and adjustable profiles; BSL, Sildur’s Vibrant, and SEUS Renewed are alternatives for different looks and settings. Compare their visual character, tune the effects to your hardware, and confirm compatibility with your exact Minecraft and loader versions before installing.
Which Minecraft shader should you try first?
For Minecraft Java Edition, start with Complementary Shaders if you want a choice of visual styles and performance profiles. Its official site describes two default styles and profiles ranging from Potato to Ultra. Those options make it a flexible starting point, not a guarantee that it will run fastest or look best on every computer.
Consider BSL if you prefer warm lighting, realistic-looking water, and a cinematic presentation; Sildur’s Vibrant if you want tiered options; or SEUS Renewed if ambitious visual effects matter more than a light configuration. These are qualitative descriptions, not results from a controlled performance comparison.
How the packs differ
| Pack | Consider it for | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Complementary / Reimagined | Two default visual styles and profiles from Potato to Ultra, as described by the official project site. | The available profiles do not establish a particular frame rate or make it universally the fastest choice. The release page has inconsistent version signals, so verify the download and compatibility before installing. |
| BSL | Warm lighting, realistic-looking water, and a cinematic look, according to the reviewed shader guide. | These are editorial descriptions, not measured comparisons. |
| Sildur’s Vibrant | A choice of tiers from Lite through Extreme, as described by the reviewed shader guide. | There is no controlled test here establishing how each tier performs on particular hardware. |
| SEUS Renewed | Players prioritizing ambitious visual effects, as characterized by the reviewed shader guide. | Its high-end positioning is editorial; no exact GPU requirement or benchmark result is established. |
Choose by the effects you actually value—such as lighting, shadows, water, and skies—and how smooth the pack feels on your system. There is no controlled head-to-head FPS test behind these recommendations, so a numeric performance ranking would be misleading.

How to install and enable a shader pack with Iris
The steps below apply to Java Edition using Iris; they are not Bedrock instructions. Iris’s official documentation explains both pack management and installation. Use its current guide for installer steps and version pairings rather than relying on old tutorial numbers.
- Install a compatible Iris setup for your Minecraft version, following the current Iris guide. For a Fabric setup, Iris documents both an installer workflow and manual installation with Fabric, Iris, and Sodium.
- Open Minecraft and go to Options > Video Settings > Shader Packs.
- Add the shader pack by dragging its file into the Shader Packs interface, or select Open Shader Pack Folder… and place the pack file there.
- Refresh the shader-pack list if needed, select the pack, enable shaders, and apply the selection.
- Open that pack’s settings and adjust its available effects or profile. Setting names and options differ from pack to pack.
With a Fabric setup, check compatibility between Iris and your other Fabric mods in the current documentation. Complementary’s release page identifies Iris and OptiFine as supported platforms, but its version signals are inconsistent; check the official download page for the version you intend to use rather than trusting a version string copied elsewhere.

What to expect from performance and hardware
Shader performance depends on the pack, its settings, the Minecraft and loader versions, and your hardware. Minecraft’s Java Edition system requirements page discusses updated game requirements and graphics hardware supporting Vulkan 1.3. That is game-level guidance, not a shader-specific minimum or a promise of a target frame rate.
Before considering a graphics-card upgrade, try a lower profile and reduce effects that matter less to you. Test in your own world and settings: no FPS figure or exact GPU threshold is established for these recommendations.

This comparison and the Iris instructions concern Minecraft Java Edition shader packs. Bedrock Edition uses a different renderer and add-on ecosystem; the Java setup steps and pack recommendations here should not be assumed to apply to Bedrock.
