Choose based on your device and the people you want to play with. Bedrock is the better fit if you play on a console or phone, need controller or touch support, want console split-screen, or want to join friends on other supported Bedrock platforms. Java is the better fit on Windows, macOS, or Linux if you want community mods, Java servers, snapshots, or access to older releases. Java and Bedrock players cannot join each other’s ordinary multiplayer sessions. On Windows PC, the Java & Bedrock bundle includes both editions, but it does not make their multiplayer compatible.
Which Minecraft edition should you choose?
Start with these two questions: what device do you play on, and which edition do your friends use? Your device may determine what is available, while your friends’ edition determines whether you can play together.
- Choose Bedrock if you play on a supported console or mobile device, want native controller or touch controls, or need cross-play with friends using other supported Bedrock devices.
- Choose Java if you play on Windows, macOS, or Linux and care most about community mods, Java multiplayer servers, snapshots, or selectable older release versions.
- On Windows PC, consider the bundle if you want both. You can launch either edition, but a Java player still cannot join a Bedrock multiplayer session, and vice versa.
Minecraft’s edition guide outlines the broad differences, and its current PC product listing describes the PC bundle and feature comparison. Platform and feature availability can change, so check the listing for your device before buying.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No—not in ordinary multiplayer sessions. Java multiplayer is for players using Java on Windows, macOS, or Linux. Bedrock players can play together across supported Bedrock platforms. Both groups need to use the same edition; the PC bundle does not bridge them.

#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
For online play, players generally need matching editions and current versions. A Microsoft account, enabled multiplayer permissions for child accounts, and a stable internet connection or local network may also be needed. Console players need the relevant online multiplayer subscription: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements for the conditions that apply.
Where can you play each edition?
Java is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock is available on supported Windows PCs, consoles, mobile devices, and other listed platforms. If you want to play on a console or phone, Bedrock is the relevant choice; Java is not the console or mobile edition.

- Learn your way around one block at atime in the new tutorial mode
- Craft all sorts of items from boats todiamond armor and create enormousstructures
- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
On a supported Windows PC, the Java & Bedrock Edition product includes both. That gives you a choice of edition on the PC, not a way to join a friend using the other one. For a platform-by-platform overview, consult Minecraft’s Different Minecraft Editions page.
Mods, add-ons, and Marketplace content
Java: third-party community mods
Java is the stronger fit if you want the open community modding route and broad customization. Mods are made by third parties, not provided as a supported Minecraft feature; Minecraft Help notes that it cannot support Java mods. See the Java mods help page for that distinction.

Bedrock: Marketplace and add-ons
Bedrock offers curated Marketplace content and add-ons. Add-ons can be applied to worlds and Realms, making them a convenient option if you want to customize Bedrock play without choosing Java for its community mod ecosystem. Minecraft explains how to activate Bedrock add-ons.
Controls and local split-screen
Bedrock is the natural choice if native controller or touch input matters: Minecraft’s PC listing describes Bedrock controller support and touch controls, while stating, “Java Edition does not have native controller support at this time.” Java can still be played with a controller through third-party tools, but that is not native support.

- Minecraft Dungeons Hero Edition includes the Hero Pass DLC content: a Hero Cape, two player skins, and a chicken pet. It also includes the Jungle Awakens and Creeping Winters DLC packs.
- Dungeon Creeper Battle new-and-nasty mobs in this all-new action-adventure, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers.
- Multiplayer Up to four players can team up and fight together in co-op mode.
- Power Up Unlock dozens of unique items and weapon enchantments for devastating special attacks.
- Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
Console Bedrock also supports local split-screen. Minecraft’s official comparison does not list split-screen as a Java feature, so a household choosing an edition specifically for console couch co-op should look to Bedrock.
Snapshots, older releases, and updates
Java gives players access to snapshots for testing upcoming changes and the option to select older release versions. Bedrock provides previews or betas for testing; for normal play, use the latest stable version. If you want to experiment with upcoming Java features or revisit an older release, Java is the more suitable choice.

Performance: what Minecraft’s guidance says
Minecraft’s PC product listing says Java requires higher computer specifications to run smoothly, while Bedrock does not require a powerful computer and often runs more smoothly. This is the publisher’s general guidance, not an independent head-to-head benchmark. Actual performance depends on the device and configuration, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed frame-rate advantage on every system.
Do you need a Realm?
Realms are optional private, always-online hosting subscriptions for playing with invited friends. They are edition-specific: a Java Realm is for Java players, and a Bedrock Realm is for Bedrock players. A Realm does not let the two editions join one another.
As listed on Minecraft’s US Realms page on October 8, 2026, the plans and simultaneous-player limits are:
| Plan | Listed US price | Players |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | $3.99 USD/month | Host plus two simultaneous players |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | $7.99 USD/month | Host plus ten simultaneous players |
| Java Realms | $7.99 USD/month | Host plus ten simultaneous players |
These are the US prices shown on the Minecraft Realms page on that date; prices and plan details may vary by region or change. You do not need a Realm just to play multiplayer: other online or LAN options may suit your group.
