Published by Mojang on December 26, 2024, “A year in blocks” presents these as community activity during the year—not as a live player count or sales report.
Minecraft’s reported community stats for 2024
The figures below come from Mojang’s year-end retrospective. The recap groups activity across exploration, crafting, taming, combat, vault openings and block breaking.
| Activity | 2024 total reported by Minecraft |
|---|---|
| Biomes explored | Over 85 million, including the Pale Garden |
| Wolf armor pieces crafted | Over one million |
| Wolves tamed | Over 100 million |
| Breezes defeated | 20 million |
| Ominous vaults opened | 4 million |
| Maces crafted | Over 2 million |
| Blocks broken | Over 300 billion |
Mojang’s writer, Sophie Austin, described the exploration figure this way: “This year, you and the rest of our Minecraft community have explored over 85 million biomes – including some new ones, like the pale garden.” The recap’s figures are rounded as stated: it uses “over” for several totals, so those should not be read as exact counts.
What the numbers do—and don’t—tell you
The totals capture several kinds of in-game activity over 2024. Block breaking is the largest reported figure, while the other totals cover exploration, crafting, taming, combat and opening ominous vaults. They are not numbers of unique players, and they do not indicate how often an individual player performed an activity.

The December 26 recap does not publish a counting methodology or provide platform or geographic breakdowns. It also does not establish whether the totals count unique players, sessions or separate in-game events. The figures should therefore be understood as activity totals reported by Minecraft, not as independently audited measurements or a basis for comparing players, countries or platforms.

In a separate Microsoft Game Dev article published March 21, 2024, Francisco Rius, Mojang Studios’ Head of Data, said Minecraft operated across 22 endpoints. He also referred to a milestone of over 300 million copies sold that had been announced the year before. Those statements offer context about the game and its data systems; they are not additional 2024 activity totals or a report of 2024 sales.

Rius also described a player-network analysis example: a random sample of 40 players connected to 330 players, and that group connected to an additional 12,000. This illustrates a social-network analysis, not the size of the player population or a year-end statistic.
