In WoW Classic Season of Discovery, Mining levels through gathering mineral veins and smelting ore into bars. Carry a Mining Pick, turn on Find Minerals, and move to higher-tier nodes as your skill allows. The best way to progress depends on your skill, faction, travel access, and how crowded your realm’s routes are; there is no single route or guaranteed profit rate that suits every character.
How Mining works in Season of Discovery
Mining is a gathering profession: mineral veins yield ore, stone, and sometimes gems. You need a Mining Pick in your inventory to mine a node. Use Find Minerals to show nearby veins on your minimap; Classic guidance says the tracking effect does not persist after death, so activate it again if needed.
Each vein has a minimum Mining skill requirement. A vein can take multiple strikes to empty, but it grants at most one skill point. Smelting is the other way to gain Mining skill: at a forge, ore can be turned into bars, and some smelting recipes grant skill-ups.
The SoD-specific Warcraft Tavern Mining guide reports that Phase 3 raised profession skills to 300 (Artisan) and that no new ores or gems had been added to Season of Discovery as of its coverage. Treat those as guide-reported details, not a guarantee about every later build. Blizzard’s Phase 4 announcement says characters can level from 50 to 60 and access all Classic zones, creating a broader endgame setting for profession gathering. It does not name a Mining cap or prescribe a best route.

Mining node skill requirements
These are the minimum skill levels to interact with the listed nodes in Wowhead’s Classic guide, updated November 18, 2024. They are not a promise that a particular node will grant a skill-up.

Use the profession’s color and skill indicators alongside these requirements: when an available node stops advancing your skill reliably, look for the next ore tier you can mine. Wowhead’s Classic Mining leveling guide also maps veins across multiple zones and lists trainer locations for Alliance, Horde, and a neutral trainer in Gadgetzan. It says any Mining trainer can teach all Mining ranks.

Choose between gathering and smelting
World gathering and smelting are both valid ways to make progress, but they trade different costs. Smelting is most useful as a supplement when you have ore on hand or a recipe that can still award skill. Wowhead’s Classic guide says smelting becomes ineffective for leveling after skill 185; it is not a guaranteed shortcut through the full profession.

Compare the value of ore and bars on your realm’s current auction house before smelting materials you might sell. A Classic-era guide notes that many bars may sell for more than their ore, with Silver and Gold as exceptions in its baseline, but that is not a current Season of Discovery price rule. Realm supply and demand can reverse the comparison.

How to plan a practical route
Mineral veins tend to appear around natural terrain such as hills, cliffs, mountains, zone borders, caves, and mines. Use a map or make a circuit suited to your character rather than assuming one route is universally best. The Classic guide’s zone and trainer references can help you identify candidate areas, but the most useful circuit depends on your access and what other players are gathering.
- Skill: Target nodes you can mine and that can still advance your profession; move up ore tiers as your skill qualifies.
- Faction and travel: Choose zones you can reach efficiently with your character’s flight paths, quests, and other travel options.
- Level and survivability: A high-level zone may have useful nodes but be impractical if its enemies make repeated trips costly.
- Competition: If nodes are routinely depleted, change the circuit, time, or zone instead of assuming a route is broken.
- Goal: If you need crafting materials, favor the ore and stone you plan to use; if you mainly want skill, prioritize accessible nodes that can advance it.
Exact best routes, current node competition, and gold per hour are not established as universal figures. They vary by realm and date, so use your in-game observations and current auction-house prices rather than relying on a fixed profit estimate.

What professions pair well with Mining?
Characters can learn two primary professions. Mining’s clearest crafting pairings are Blacksmithing and Engineering, both of which use mined materials such as bars, stone, and gems. Choose between them based on the recipes and items you want to make; Mining supports either, but does not require you to take one.
For a second gathering profession, Skinning is an option if you prefer collecting materials over crafting. It does not use Mining materials, so it is a gathering-focused combination rather than a production synergy.
