If Minecraft Bedrock multiplayer will not connect, first check that everyone is using Bedrock and the same current game version. Then confirm account permissions, the host’s multiplayer settings and availability, and the joining method. These checks isolate the most common causes before you change network settings.
Start with the edition and game version
Every player must be running Bedrock Edition to join a Bedrock world, Realm, or server. Java Edition players cannot join a Bedrock session. Minecraft recommends installing the latest available release, and mismatched or outdated versions can prevent players from connecting. Compare the version shown on each device and update any installation that is behind before trying again. Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting guide and its multiplayer requirements cover these checks.
Check accounts, friends, and multiplayer permissions
For cross-play, console and mobile players should be signed in to the Microsoft account they use with Minecraft. On Nintendo Switch, choose Sign in with a Microsoft Account and enter the in-game code on Minecraft’s Remote Connection page; see the Switch sign-in instructions. On PlayStation, linking a Microsoft account to a PlayStation Network account enables cross-platform multiplayer in Realms, according to Minecraft’s PlayStation FAQ.
- Make sure both players are friends in Minecraft when joining a friend-hosted world.
- Check that multiplayer access is enabled for each account. Child accounts may have multiplayer restricted by account permissions; consult the official guidance for the account and platform.
- Have the host open the world settings and enable multiplayer, choosing an access level appropriate for the intended players.
Confirm online subscriptions and host availability
On consoles, online multiplayer may require the relevant platform subscription. Minecraft names Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online among the requirements; subscription availability and terms can change, so check the current platform rules. This is separate from signing in or having the right game version: a player may pass those checks but still lack online access.

A friend-hosted world is available only while its host is online. If the host is offline, use a Realm or server instead of expecting the friend’s world to remain joinable.
Join a friend-hosted Bedrock world
- Have the host start the world with multiplayer enabled.
- On the joining device, select Play, then open the Friends tab.
- Under Joinable Friends, select the host’s world. The host appears there only while online.
Both players need to be Minecraft friends and online at the same time. Minecraft’s friend-world instructions describe this join flow.

Set up a LAN game
LAN play is for players on the same local network. The host must make the world visible to other devices on that network.
- On the host device, open the world’s edit screen and select Multiplayer.
- Enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players, then start the world.
- On the joining device, select Play > Worlds and look for the LAN listing.
If the world does not appear, check that the devices share the same local network and that both settings are enabled. See Minecraft’s Bedrock LAN instructions.

Choose the multiplayer path that fits
| Option | Availability | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Friend-hosted world | The host must be online. | Minecraft friend status, host’s multiplayer setting, account permissions, current version, and console online subscription. |
| LAN | Players share a local network. | Same network, current version, LAN visibility setting, and device support. |
| Realm | Persistent hosted world; supports Bedrock cross-play on platforms listed by Minecraft. | Invitation, platform compatibility, service status, and console online subscription. |
| Server | Hosted multiplayer option. | Bedrock compatibility, server details, account permissions, and platform online subscription. |
Minecraft lists Bedrock Realms cross-play for Android, iOS, Windows, Amazon Fire, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and Chromebook on its Realms page. Console multiplayer requires the applicable platform subscription, sold separately. Check Minecraft’s current page for platform and service details.

If the basic checks pass, confirm the host is online and check service status. For suspected Realm connection problems, Minecraft advises checking PlayFab and Xbox Live status. Custom DNS or port configurations can also conflict with Minecraft, but the right network steps depend on the platform and setup. Use the official instructions for that platform rather than applying a generic DNS value or port-forwarding recipe.

If sign-in or authentication appears stuck, signing out of the Microsoft account and signing back in can help restore the account connection on supported platforms. Minecraft explains this recovery step in its sign-in reset instructions. It does not replace checks for permissions, subscriptions, game versions, or service availability.
