How to get the free Minecraft PS5 upgrade

- Claim the PS5 digital version. Eligible PS4 owners do not need to buy it again, according to Mojang’s upgrade instructions.
If the Store does not recognize your entitlement, check that you are using the account associated with the PS4 game. The offer is for existing PS4 owners; it is not a free copy for every PS5 owner.

These disc conditions are stated on the PlayStation Store listing. A disc-based upgrade remains tied to the disc: keep it available even after claiming the PS5 download.
What the native PS5 version changes
The PS5 release is a native version, rather than simply the PS4 game running through backward compatibility. Mojang said the version was designed for the console’s hardware and announced greater render distance at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. Those are Mojang’s launch specifications, not independent benchmark results. The native release date was October 22, 2024, as announced by Mojang.

Mojang also said the game supports cross-play with friends on Bedrock devices and access to the Minecraft Store for worlds, add-ons, and skin packs. An earlier PS5 Preview was available before the full release; it was a preview build, not the release version.
Price if you are buying Minecraft for PlayStation
For readers without an eligible PS4 entitlement, Mojang points to the PlayStation Store or a video-game retailer. As of October 8, 2026, the US PlayStation Store lists the PS5 and PS4 Standard Editions at $19.99 each. Online play and Vibrant Visuals details
The current PS5 Store listing says PlayStation Plus is required for online play and marks in-game purchases as optional. Store terms and availability can differ by region or change over time.
The listing also describes limitations for Vibrant Visuals: Marketplace add-ons, skins, and Persona items work with the mode, but worlds and texture packs are not compatible with it. Local split-screen is not supported while using Vibrant Visuals; if multiple players join locally, the game switches to Fancy or Simple rendering.
