Hammer succeeds by staying mobile while charging, finding safe chances to hit the monster’s head, and choosing a release that fits the opening. Head hits can build toward a stun, but chasing the head into danger or committing to a long attack when the monster is about to move can cost more than a shorter, safer hit.
How to play Hammer
Think of Hammer as a moving, charge-based blunt weapon. Hold a charge as you reposition, look for a safe angle toward the head, and release when the monster gives you an opening. Head attacks can stun a monster and create an opportunity for the team, but the goal is not to force a head hit at any cost.

Hammer cannot guard. Since moving toward the head can put you in front of the monster, approach from a safer side when possible. If the head is moving, out of reach, or unsafe to attack, reposition or wait for a better opening rather than chasing it.
Hammer controls and basic combos
The following inputs are the PS5-default controls listed by Ascendance Database’s Hammer guide, last updated September 29, 2026. Button mappings can vary by platform, personal settings, and updates; confirm them in the current in-game controls or Hunter’s Notes.

The guide also lists charge levels up to three. Xbox equivalents are provided in its control guide; PC inputs depend on the player’s settings. These are guide-listed mappings, not a guarantee that every configuration or later patch uses the same inputs.
Choose a charge release for the opening
Classify the opening before committing. A brief chance calls for a moving charge release or another short response that lets you keep repositioning. A knockdown, or an attack that has clearly finished, can give you time for a more committed sequence.

- Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.
- Head still moving or unsafe: take a shorter safe response, change your angle, or reset.
- Small opening: favor a moving release rather than waiting for maximum charge or beginning a long sequence.
- Knockdown or clearly completed attack: use the time for a longer commitment if the head is accessible.
This is tactical guidance, not a measured damage ranking. No damage values or universal best combo are established by the cited guides, and a longer sequence is not automatically better if the monster can move before it connects.
Use Focus Mode and Heaven Quaker
Capcom describes Focus Mode as a way to aim attacks more precisely at weak points and notes that some weapons have distinctive actions in that mode. The Hammer-specific move listed by the current Ascendance Database control guide is Focus Strike: Heaven Quaker, mapped there to L2 + R1 on PS5-default controls. Capcom’s overview establishes the general purpose of Focus Mode; the Hammer move name and button mapping come from the third-party guide.

Build priorities for Hammer
There is no universally optimal armor set established here. Treat build advice as categories to compare for the hunt you plan to do, not as tested numerical outcomes:
- Raw damage and affinity: broad offensive priorities in the consulted field guide.
- Charge or stamina comfort: consider it when it materially helps you maintain the moving-charge loop.
- Sharpness upkeep: weigh skills that help you maintain sharpness during the hunt.
- Matchup-specific defense: use defensive or resistance skills that address the monster you are facing.
When comparing two sets, check the final in-game status screen after changing armor or decorations. Compare their raw damage and affinity for the intended hunt, whether comfort skills improve your uptime, how each handles sharpness, and whether its defenses answer the actual matchup.

A simple practice drill
- Choose a familiar monster and circle it while holding a charge, prioritizing movement over attacking.
- Attack only after the head stops moving and you have a safe angle.
- Count safe hits rather than stuns. The aim is to learn when a release fits the opening, not to force a particular outcome.
- If the head stays inaccessible, reset your position instead of following it into a dangerous angle.
Where to confirm controls and current behavior
Because third-party control guides can become outdated after game updates, check the current in-game controls or Hunter’s Notes when a button mapping or move behavior differs from the table. Capcom Support points players to the official Monster Hunter Wilds online manuals. Capcom’s May 30, 2024 overview of weapons and Focus Mode explains the mode’s general purpose, rather than current patch balance.
