There is no evidence that Monster Hunter Wilds caused a measurable nationwide surge in cheese consumption. What was reported in Japan was a smaller, anecdotal story: players posted about craving cheese naan after seeing a meal scene in the game, and Tokyo restaurant Salam Namaste said the dish had become so popular it was running low on cheese.
What happened after the meal scene appeared?
Monster Hunter Wilds launched on February 28, 2025. In a meal scene set in Kunafa Village, the hunter and companions eat bread topped with cheese. Japanese players subsequently posted that they wanted cheese naan, with comments translated by Automaton West including “I want to eat cheese naan” and “I came here determined to eat cheese naan today.” These are social-media reactions, not a representative survey of players or consumers. Automaton West’s March 3, 2025 report documented the scene and posts.
On March 2, Nepalese restaurant Salam Namaste Tokyo posted that cheese naan was unusually popular and that it had started running low on cheese, so it needed to buy more at a supermarket. The restaurant thanked Monster Hunter. Automaton reproduced an English translation: “The cheese naan is too popular. Even though I had a lot of cheese, I started to run out so I had to go to the supermarket to buy more. Thank you, Monster Hunter!” That is the restaurant’s informal account, not a published sales tally. GameSpot’s March 4 coverage also described the post and cited Automaton’s reporting.
Why the “surge” headline needs qualification
The reported evidence points to a burst of interest in one dish and one restaurant’s experience—not a demonstrated rise in cheese consumption across Japan or elsewhere. The cited reports provide no sales figures for Salam Namaste, no comparison with its usual demand, and no national restaurant or cheese-market data. The scale and duration of any bump therefore cannot be established from these accounts.

The restaurant’s separate “99 cheese naan” post was a joke tied to a viral video format, not a verified count of orders. Treating it as sales data would overstate what the posts show.
How the in-game food compares with cheese naan
The game’s bread is shown with cheese on top, while cheese naan is commonly made with melted cheese inside. The visual resemblance was enough to prompt cravings and social posts, but the two depictions are not identical. Automaton’s report describes the distinction and the reaction it prompted.

The game’s sales are a separate statistic
Capcom reported that Monster Hunter Wilds had sold more than 10 million units worldwide by March 31, 2025. That milestone concerns copies of the game, not cheese, naan, restaurant orders, or food consumption. Capcom’s announcement lists the February 28, 2025 release date and PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Capcom’s March 31, 2025 announcement is the source for the game-sales figure.
