The figures are not contradictory: they come from different publishers and measures. Sensor Tower reported that first-half spending fell 6.6% year over year while downloads edged up 0.4%, and its September outlook forecast a 2.3% full-year decline.
How large was mobile gaming in 2022?
Newzoo’s surfaced 2022 estimate put mobile-game revenue at $91.8 billion, or 50% of the global games market. That is a market-wide estimate from Newzoo, not a number to add to or directly equate with Sensor Tower’s App Store and Google Play figures. Newzoo’s detailed methodology and exact revenue definition were not available in the accessible page view, so the estimate cannot be reconciled precisely with the store-based measures below. Newzoo’s 2022 result is best read as an indication of mobile’s scale relative to games overall, not as a like-for-like comparison with another publisher’s store-spending estimate.
What did Sensor Tower report—and what did it forecast?
Sensor Tower’s figures track player spending in the App Store and Google Play, a narrower stated scope than an all-channel measure of game revenue. Its September 2022 outlook forecast that this spending would reach $86 billion for the full year, down 2.3% year over year. That was a forecast published during the year, not an audited final result.
For the first half, Sensor Tower reported $41.2 billion in worldwide mobile-game player spending, down 6.6% year over year. It also counted 28.1 billion downloads, up 0.4%. These measures point in different directions: store-measured spending contracted while installs were nearly flat and slightly higher. Downloads count installs; they do not establish how many people were active, how long they played, or how much an individual spent. Sensor Tower’s H1 report also says its estimates exclude local taxes, in-app advertising, in-app spending on mobile commerce, and refunds. They therefore should not be treated as a census of every revenue stream associated with mobile games.

How did spending change over the year?
Sensor Tower’s quarterly figures show the decline deepening in its covered stores as the year progressed. Each figure below is worldwide player or consumer spending for the stated quarter, compared with the same quarter a year earlier; Q4 and a final full-year actual are not established by these figures.

In Q3, Sensor Tower attributed $11.9 billion of the total to Apple’s platform and $7.4 billion to Google Play. These quarterly results are store estimates, not a complete tally of all mobile-game income. Sensor Tower described the broader softening as partly reflecting normalization after the pandemic-era surge and worldwide economic headwinds; that is the publisher’s interpretation, not a quantified breakdown of causes. How did the App Store and Google Play compare?
In Sensor Tower’s H1 2022 estimates, spending and downloads moved differently by store. Year-over-year changes below refer to the first half of 2022 against H1 2021.

Sensor Tower’s accessible H1 summary reports the direction, but not a comparable download count or percentage change for each store. The total across the two platforms was 28.1 billion downloads, up 0.4% year over year. The H1 analysis makes clear why a single overall download trend should not be mistaken for a spending trend on either platform.

Which genres generated spending and downloads?
Genre rankings depend on whether the measure is revenue or installs. In Sensor Tower’s 2022 outlook analysis, mid-core games represented 60% of H1 player spending but 14% of downloads. Casual games accounted for 26% of revenue and 78% of downloads. These shares describe different measures, so casual games’ larger download share does not mean they generated more spending. Where did the market diverge by country?
Sensor Tower’s Q1 2022 country figures illustrate that the global decline was not uniform. These are quarter-specific results, not full-year market rankings or totals.

- United States: mobile-game revenue was down 10% year over year in Q1. Sensor Tower identified the U.S. as the largest market by revenue in that quarter.
- Japan: revenue declined 18% to $4.2 billion in Q1; Japan was the second-largest market by revenue in Sensor Tower’s account.
- Taiwan: revenue rose 7% to almost $700 million in Q1, and Sensor Tower said Taiwan moved ahead of Germany in its ranking.
Because these are Q1 observations, they should not be used as full-year country growth rates. Sensor Tower’s Q1 country analysis supplies the period and market context.

Newzoo’s $91.8 billion estimate describes mobile-game revenue and its share of the global games market. Sensor Tower’s $86 billion figure was a September forecast for player spending across two app stores. Their coverage, definitions, and status differ; one is a surfaced estimate and the other a forecast. The available methodology does not support a precise reconciliation, so the figures should remain attributed to their respective publishers rather than combined into a single definitive total.
