The ModRetro Chromatic is a premium, FPGA-based handheld for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. Published reviewers praise its construction and faithful 160 × 144 display, but its high price and two-system focus make it a specialist purchase—not a general-purpose retro handheld. It makes the strongest case for collectors who want to play physical GB and GBC games on a dedicated modern device.
Is the ModRetro Chromatic worth it?
It can be, if you already own Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges and value a purpose-built cartridge experience more than a large library of systems or a bigger screen. If you do not have cartridges, or want one handheld for many kinds of retro games, the Chromatic’s narrow scope makes its premium price harder to justify.
Published reviews give it strong marks for its display and construction, but their praise is not a substitute for hands-on testing of every configuration or cartridge. GameSpot described the device as well built and said it would choose the Chromatic over modded Game Boys the reviewer had used. Android Authority called it an ultimate Game Boy experience while emphasizing its price and limited compatibility. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not a claim that every buyer will notice a difference.
What does the Chromatic play?
The Chromatic plays original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, as well as Chromatic-branded cartridges, according to GameSpot’s review. Its FPGA hardware is designed around this cartridge-first experience. It is not presented as a general emulator for loading games from a broad range of systems.

ModRetro called it “the world’s only pixel-accurate Game Boy® cartridge-compatible console” in a company article dated June 2, 2024. That is the manufacturer’s promotional claim, not an independent audit of every competing device. Reviewers’ descriptions of faithful Game Boy Color visuals support the narrower point: the Chromatic is built to reproduce that platform’s look, rather than upscale its games onto a high-resolution panel.
Compatibility claims should not be mistaken for universal testing. In its July 10, 2025 review, Android Authority said the reviewer used the included updated Tetris cartridge and borrowed games because their own collection was elsewhere. Check the compatibility of a particular cartridge if it is essential to your purchase.
How good is the screen?
The reported native resolution is 160 × 144 pixels, matching the Game Boy Color’s resolution. GameSpot describes a 2.56-inch backlit IPS LCD. The small panel and native resolution are part of the device’s fidelity-first approach: it preserves the original pixel scale instead of enlarging the image onto a modern high-resolution screen.

Lens material is not consistently described across reviews, so do not assume every Chromatic has the same configuration. GameSpot describes a sapphire-crystal display, while WIRED reports Gorilla Glass as standard and sapphire as a $100 upgrade. CGMagazine also describes sapphire on the device it reviewed. Confirm the lens material and edition for the specific unit you are considering.

How does it compare with the Analogue Pocket?

| Consideration | ModRetro Chromatic | Analogue Pocket |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Designed around original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, plus Chromatic-branded cartridges. | Worth comparing if you want broader use; detailed current system support is not established by the cited reviews. |
| Display | 2.56 inches, 160 × 144 pixels, as reported by GameSpot. | 3.5 inches, 1600 × 1440 pixels, as reported by GameSpot. |
| Best fit | A dedicated physical-cartridge GB/GBC experience. | A larger display and the possibility of broader platform use, subject to checking exact support. |
The Chromatic’s display prioritizes original-resolution presentation; the Pocket’s reported panel is substantially larger and denser. If screen size or versatility matters more than a dedicated GB/GBC experience, compare the Pocket’s current capabilities and availability before deciding.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Price: Android Authority recorded a $199.99 MSRP in its July 10, 2025 review, and GameSpot referred to a $199 launch price. These are published historical price references, not verified current offers.
- Limited library: The device centers on Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges rather than serving as a multi-system handheld.
- Small, standard-resolution screen: Its 2.56-inch, 160 × 144 panel suits its fidelity goal, but is not the choice for someone who wants a large modern display.
- Configuration uncertainty: Reviews differ on whether sapphire is standard or an upgrade, so confirm the specification for the exact product wave or listing.
CGMagazine also points out the trade-off behind the product’s focus: smartphones and emulation devices can go beyond original Game Boy capabilities, but they do not offer the same dedicated physical-cartridge proposition. Whether that proposition is worth paying for depends on what you want from the hardware.

What does the “arms dealer” reference mean?
The phrase in the headline is charged editorial language, not a neutral job title. WIRED identifies Palmer Luckey as leading both ModRetro and Anduril, and describes Anduril as a military contractor. Its coverage raises the question of whether that business connection should affect a purchase. Readers can weigh the relationship for themselves; the relevant factual point is the leadership link, not the headline’s characterization.

Who should buy the Chromatic?
- Consider it if you own GB or GBC cartridges and want a dedicated modern device built around playing them.
- Compare alternatives if you want a larger screen, broader platform possibilities, or a device that does more than play GB/GBC cartridges.
- Check before ordering if lens material, a particular cartridge, current price, or retailer stock will determine your decision.
If you need games as well as hardware, distinguish original Nintendo cartridges from licensed modern releases and Chromatic-branded cartridges. WIRED reported that ModRetro sold around a dozen original games and mentioned recreations such as Rayman and Toki Tori; its captured page showed a $30–$100 range, which should not be treated as a current catalog or price quote. Check each game’s identity, authenticity, compatibility, and current listing before buying.
