ModRetro M64: What “Fully Playable” Means for This N64 Console

ModRetro’s M64 plays original N64 cartridges, but “fully playable” referred to a 2025 public demo, not flawless compatibility. Here’s what buyers should check.

ModRetro’s M64 was publicly playable at Portland Retro Gaming Expo in October 2025, but that milestone did not mean every Nintendo 64 game worked perfectly. By 2026, it was a purchasable FPGA-based console for original N64 cartridges, with reviewers reporting broad compatibility alongside known game-specific and software limitations. If you are considering one, check the current compatibility list for the games you care about rather than treating “fully playable” as a guarantee.

What “fully playable” meant

The phrase came from an Android Authority report published October 16, 2025. It referred to the M64 being available for public hands-on play at Portland Retro Gaming Expo, held October 17–19. At the time, complete specifications and a release date had not yet been announced. It was a demonstration milestone, not a claim that every N64 cartridge had been tested or worked flawlessly.

Later evidence paints a more useful picture for buyers. ModRetro said in an April 23, 2026 development update that work on the N64 core would continue for years, with perfect accuracy as an ultimate goal. The company’s CEO also cautioned against “no emulation” marketing: FPGA-based recreation is still emulation, and behavioral gaps can remain.

What the M64 is and what it offers

The M64 is a physical console designed to play original Nintendo 64 cartridges on modern displays. ModRetro says it uses a 16nm AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA, supports original NTSC and PAL games, and includes built-in Expansion Pak and Controller Pak functionality. Its official product page lists HDMI output modes of 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, with 4K output specified at 60 fps. Those are vendor specifications, not independent performance measurements.

  • KEEPS VENTS CLEAR :The stand is shaped to avoid covering the console's ventilation openings and maintain open airflow paths.
  • STABLE ONE-PIECE DESIGN: Solid one-piece construction has no moving parts or separate components to assemble.
  • CLEAN DESKTOP SETUP : Elevates the console while providing a simple, low-profile stand for gaming desks, entertainment centers, and display areas.

“4K” describes the console’s display output capability; it does not mean original N64 games are rendered natively in 4K or establish that their image quality is superior to another system’s. Scaling, filters, and color processing affect how games look. Tom’s Guide’s August 31, 2026 review noted image-quality trade-offs, so treat resolution options and visual quality as separate considerations.

ModRetro lists local play for up to four controllers, wireless updates, and a fanless design. Its named controller support includes original Nintendo 64 controllers, M64 Pro, Hyperkin Premium “Captain,” Retro Fighters, and 8BitDo 64 controllers; Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers require an accessory. Check the live product and compatibility information for a specific controller revision or adapter before buying.

As of October 8, 2026, ModRetro’s page listed the M64 at $229.99 USD. The listed package includes the console, a pre-installed 16GB SD card, a multi-region power adapter, and a power cable; the page gives dimensions of 8.5 × 6.5 × 2.2 inches and weight of 1.6 lb. Price, availability, shipping terms, and package contents can change. The same page specifies 48 kHz, 16-bit PCM audio; these are manufacturer-published specifications.

How well does it run N64 games?

Tom’s Guide reported in its August 31, 2026 review that a large majority of titles should work without issues according to the compatibility list it consulted, while also documenting known problems, including examples involving Donkey Kong 64 and Hydro Thunder. The reviewer found other software shortcomings and concluded that compatibility was not perfect. These are observations from that review date, not a permanent inventory of bugs: firmware and compatibility information can change.

For the technical context, AMD’s June 1, 2026 account of the M64 identifies an AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA as the console’s core component. An FPGA can be configured to reproduce hardware logic, but that method alone does not prove that every game behaves identically to original hardware. AMD executive Sumit Shah described the technology as enabling developers “to re-create original hardware behavior with extraordinary precision”; that is an attributed company statement, not independent testing.

Before buying for a particular game, consult ModRetro’s current compatibility information and firmware notes. Look for the exact title and, where relevant, regional version. A broad claim that most titles work is not a substitute for checking a cartridge you plan to use.

What to compare before buying

  • Your games: Search the current compatibility information for the exact titles and versions in your collection.
  • Picture processing: Compare the output modes and available filters with independent image-quality observations. Output resolution alone does not tell you how a game will look.
  • Controllers: Confirm that your controller model is supported and whether it needs an accessory.
  • Multiplayer: The manufacturer lists support for up to four controllers, which suits local split-screen play.
  • Current terms: Check the official page for today’s price, stock, included items, and shipping details.

In its August 2026 comparison, Tom’s Guide favored the Analogue 3D for feature completeness and image processing, while noting M64 strengths such as its controller style and scanline settings. That is one publication’s assessment at its review date, not a universal verdict; your game library, display preferences, and controller setup may matter more.

Who the M64 is for

The most straightforward use case is someone who owns N64 cartridges and wants to play them on a modern display, especially with local multiplayer and compatible controllers. ModRetro also positions the M64 within a physical-game ecosystem, saying it is funding independent games and working on re-releases and remasters. Those plans are not a promise of particular future releases or dates.
