Roblox banned creator Schlep in August 2025, and a petition calling for CEO David Baszucki’s removal passed 50,000 signatures amid the backlash. The dispute was not simply over whether catching alleged predators is worthwhile: Roblox said the methods used by banned vigilantes could bypass platform safeguards and put users at risk, while Schlep said his team had provided evidence to the company and helped prompt arrests.
What happened
On August 13, 2025, Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman published the company’s explanation for banning Schlep and other vigilantes. Coverage reported that Roblox also sent Schlep a cease-and-desist letter and terminated associated accounts. The next day, PC Gamer reported that a petition calling for Baszucki to be removed had passed 55,000 signatures. These are contemporaneous figures, not a current petition count.
The campaign’s title, “Stop Roblox From Silencing Predator Catchers,” reflects critics’ framing of the decision. The central disagreement is about both platform control and child-safety methods: whether outside investigators can act effectively without crossing rules or creating risks that the platform’s safeguards are designed to prevent.
Why Roblox said it banned vigilantes
Roblox said some vigilantes impersonated minors, initiated contact with adults, mimicked inappropriate behavior, and steered users toward conversations on other services. The company argued that these tactics could bypass its safety systems, expose users to risk, and make it harder to review or report conduct in context. Kaufman wrote that “the vigilantes we’ve banned have taken actions that are both unacceptable and create an unsafe environment for users.”

Roblox also said delayed reporting and attempts to arrange off-platform meetups can leave alleged offenders on the platform longer. It argued that evidence collected outside its systems—such as screenshots—may be difficult to verify and can be misused. These are the company’s stated reasons; they do not establish what happened in every individual case.
What Schlep and critics said
News reports attributed a different account to Schlep: he said he and his team supplied Roblox with evidence and that his investigations had helped lead to six arrests. Those statements are Schlep’s claims as reported by journalists, not independently verified findings in the cited coverage. The sources do not settle whether Roblox acted on each report, verify the full history of the investigations, or adjudicate the underlying allegations.

Critics saw the ban as silencing someone trying to expose alleged predators. Roblox’s position was that the goal did not excuse methods it considered unsafe or contrary to its rules. Assessing the dispute therefore requires separating the purpose of an investigation from how it was conducted, what was reported to Roblox, and whether the methods protected or endangered users.
How to report serious safety concerns on Roblox
Roblox recommends using its in-platform reporting tools rather than trying to investigate or confront suspected offenders. The company says reports can include contextual information such as object and avatar IDs, which it says can help moderators review incidents and support law-enforcement reporting. Roblox also describes a Trusted Flaggers program through which trusted partner organizations can submit reports of serious criminal activity for priority review.

Roblox says it reviews more than one billion reports each year, spanning issues from spam and cheating to serious violations. It reported that it submitted 24,522 reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in 2024—0.12% of the 20.3 million total reports submitted across the industry, according to the company. Those figures describe Roblox’s reported systems and activity; they do not establish how any particular report was handled.
Why the petition figure needs a date
The petition count rose quickly and differed between reports published on August 14, 2025. PC Gamer reported more than 55,000 signatures, while The Independent reported more than 48,000 earlier that morning. The available reporting supports saying the petition passed 50,000 at that time, but not presenting either figure as its current total.

The scale behind the safety debate
Roblox reported an average of 111.8 million daily active users for the quarter ended June 30, 2025. The company also said users sent 6.1 billion chat messages per day and engaged in 1.1 million hours of voice chat across 28 languages. These company-published figures help explain why Roblox emphasizes scalable reporting and moderation systems; they are not independent estimates.
