Morbid: The Lords of Ire is a single-player, third-person Soulslike action game and a 3D follow-up to the isometric Morbid: The Seven Acolytes. Its appeal is combat experimentation—different weapon styles, runes, blessings and a sanity mechanic that trades risk for power—set against grotesque horror imagery. Reviews and player ratings are mixed: some praise the combat and weapon ideas, while criticism includes uneven polish and shortcomings in depth, story or encounter design. It is a better fit for players drawn to its combat loop than for those seeking a richly developed story or consistently polished adventure.
What kind of game is Morbid: The Lords of Ire?
Developed by Still Running, Morbid: The Lords of Ire returns to the setting and protagonist of Morbid: The Seven Acolytes. The Striver of Dibrom is back, but the series moves from the earlier game’s isometric view to an all-new 3D perspective. Steam calls it both a continuation and a reinvention; the publisher’s February 2023 announcement described it as a sequel. Steam | Merge Games / Still Running announcement

It is a single-player action adventure built around fighting through five lands, confronting enemies and bosses, and adapting your combat approach. Official listings advertise multiple weapon styles, runes and blessings. These describe the game’s intended systems, not independent confirmation of how well each works in play.
How the sanity mechanic works
The game’s defining risk-and-reward idea is sanity: succumbing to insanity can grant power while changing how the world appears. That premise gives the system a thematic role as well as a combat one, but player accounts are divided on its execution. Treat it as a potentially interesting hook rather than a reason on its own to expect a deep or consistently rewarding build system.

What do the reviews say?
The overall picture is mixed, not a clear consensus that the game either succeeds or fails. Reviewers have found appealing ideas in the combat and weapon upgrades, while specific criticisms include limited polish, story or gameplay depth, and uneven encounter design. The balance of those strengths and weaknesses will matter more to a prospective player than any one score.
Metacritic’s displayed critic excerpts illustrate the split: one review praises weapon upgrading and simplified combat but says progression lacks polish; another finds the combat entertaining while judging the story and gameplay depth wanting. Those are individual critics’ assessments, not universal findings. Its player-review excerpts also range from praise for combat, music, exploration and challenge to complaints about technical polish, environments, story, hitboxes, pacing and the sanity mechanic. Is Morbid: The Lords of Ire a Soulslike?
It is presented as a Soulslike action game, and the third-person combat, formidable enemies and bosses, and challenge-focused framing place it in that territory. The more useful buying question is whether its particular emphasis suits you: the official descriptions foreground weapons and combat customization, while the reception record includes concerns about story, depth, polish and pacing. If you mainly want to experiment with combat and tolerate rough edges, it may be worth considering; if narrative or consistently refined encounters are central to your enjoyment, the mixed criticism is a reason to check recent feedback for your platform before buying.

What platforms is it on, and when did it release?
Storefronts and databases do not agree on the initial release date. Steam lists May 17, 2024; Nintendo UK lists the Switch release on May 17, 2024; and the US PlayStation Store lists May 17, 2024 for PS5 while presenting PS5 and PS4 editions. Metacritic records an initial release date of May 23, 2024. For purchase or availability, use the date and edition shown by the relevant platform storefront rather than treating the database date as universal.
Metacritic lists PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Steam lists the game for PC and also offers a downloadable demo, soundtrack and digital art book. Nintendo’s official listing confirms a Switch game card edition, but this does not establish current retailer stock or regional compatibility. - Edition and current availability: Confirm the storefront page for your platform, including whether you are choosing a PS4, PS5, digital or physical Switch edition. Check current price and stock directly with the retailer; availability can vary by region and change over time.
- Platform-specific performance: The available platform listings and review snapshots do not establish a reliable cross-platform performance comparison or confirm current patch performance. If frame rate, stability or controls are deciding factors, look for recent feedback for the exact edition you plan to play.
- Accessibility on PlayStation: The US PlayStation Store listing specifies nine accessibility features, basic subtitles limited to the main story and main characters, some controller remapping, stick sensitivity and inversion options, reduced preset difficulty, pausing and manual saving. These details describe that PlayStation Store record and should not be assumed to apply to other versions. US PlayStation Store listing
- Your preferred strengths: The game’s advertised draw is combat and customization; the critical concerns include polish, depth, story and encounter design. Decide which side of that trade-off matters more to you, and use reviews from your platform where possible.
How does it compare with Morbid: The Seven Acolytes?
The clearest established difference is perspective: The Seven Acolytes uses an isometric approach, while The Lords of Ire shifts to 3D third-person action and brings back the Striver of Dibrom. Official descriptions frame the new game around five lands, grotesque enemies and five Lords of Ire, alongside weapon styles, runes, blessings and the sanity system. The publisher’s 2023 announcement also mentioned optional quests, secrets, skills and abilities, scavenged weapons and elite encounters as pre-release plans; current store descriptions do not confirm every one of those announced details, so they should not be treated as a definitive feature list for the released build.
