For verified shared play, Sackboy: A Big Adventure supports 1–4 players. ASTRO BOT and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are single-player options, not games for a group to play together. “Family friendly” depends on the child and household, so check the rating and content descriptors for your region before choosing.
Which PS5 games can we play together as a family?
Sackboy: A Big Adventure for shared platforming
PlayStation’s PS5 listing describes Sackboy: A Big Adventure as a multiplayer platforming adventure for 1–4 players, with optional online play and optional in-game purchases. It is the clearest pick in this shortlist when the goal is to play together. The US listing gives the descriptors Mild Cartoon Violence and Mild Lyrics. Check the current regional listing and edition, and decide whether you intend to play locally or online before buying.

What is a good family game already included with PS5?
ASTRO’s Playroom as a no-extra-purchase starting point
PlayStation says ASTRO’s Playroom comes preloaded on PS5 and is free for all PS5 console users. Its platforming adventure explores four worlds and demonstrates DualSense features. PlayStation describes it as designed for gamers and families alike, but the US page lists fantasy violence; check the rating and descriptors that apply in your region. See PlayStation’s ASTRO’s Playroom listing.

Which single-player PS5 games might suit a family?
ASTRO BOT for a larger solo platforming adventure
PlayStation describes ASTRO BOT as a standalone, full-sized 3D action-platforming adventure across more than 50 planets. Its US product page lists one player, crude humor, and fantasy violence. It may fit a player looking for a substantial solo game, but it is not a multiplayer family choice. The listed release date is September 6, 2024, and the developer is Team ASOBI. See PlayStation’s ASTRO BOT listing.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart only after checking its descriptors
PlayStation lists Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart as a one-player PS5 action adventure. Its listed content descriptors include alcohol reference, animated blood, and fantasy violence. Whether that content suits a particular child is a household decision; consult the current regional rating and descriptors rather than relying on the game’s animated style. See PlayStation’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart listing.

How should parents decide what “family friendly” means?
Use the regional age-rating symbol and its content descriptors together. PlayStation’s US ratings guidance says: “To take full advantage of the ESRB rating system, it’s important to check both the rating symbol (on the front of the game box) and the content descriptors (on the back of the game box).” PlayStation’s guidance describes E as potentially suitable for ages 6 and older and E10+ as potentially suitable for ages 10 and older; these are not guarantees for every child. The ESRB applies in the US and Canada, and rating systems and labels vary elsewhere. Read PlayStation’s US ratings guidance.
- Content: Look at the specific descriptors as well as the rating symbol; genre or colorful presentation alone does not establish suitability.
- Shared play: Check the player count and whether play is local, online, or both.
- Accounts and online access: Confirm any current account, subscription, or family-setting requirements before starting online play.
- Cost: Distinguish a preloaded, free game such as ASTRO’s Playroom from titles that require purchase. Check current store and physical-edition availability in your region.
- Play style: Decide whether the child wants platforming, action, or a solo challenge—and whether the household wants to play together or take turns.
What parental controls can help manage?
PlayStation documents controls for children’s access to games and content, communication and user-generated content, game age levels, playtime, and monthly spending. Settings are managed through family management on PS5 and the PlayStation Family app. These account-level controls can complement a parent’s review of the specific game; they do not replace it. Interface details may change, so follow the current support instructions. See PlayStation’s parental-controls support page.
