Parks Canada describes this easy route as 1.3 km one way, with minimal elevation change and an estimated 45-minute round trip; it offers views of Mount Fay and Fay Glacier. Reaching the summit is a separate technical alpine climb, not an extension of this lakeshore walk.
How to see Mount Fay from Moraine Lake
- Check access before travelling. Parks Canada directs visitors to take transit to Moraine Lake. Review the current access information and trail conditions on Parks Canada’s Banff hiking page before setting out, since transport arrangements and trail status can change.
- Find the trailhead. The Moraine Lake Lakeshore Trail begins just beyond Moraine Lake Lodge.
- Walk the lakeshore route for the view. Parks Canada lists the trail as 1.3 km one way, with minimal elevation gain and loss, and estimates 45 minutes for the round trip. Its route description names Mount Fay and Fay Glacier among the views. The time is Parks Canada’s estimate, not a guarantee for every visitor or condition.
This is a viewpoint walk, not a summit route. You can enjoy the mountain from the lakeshore without attempting an alpine ascent.
Is Mount Fay a hike to the summit?
No. The lakeshore trail provides a view of Mount Fay; it does not reach the summit. Mount Fay is a glaciated alpine objective involving technical climbing and glacier travel. Cloud Nine Guides describes guided programs departing from Moraine Lake that include scrambling, rock climbing, a glaciated traverse to the Neil Colgan Hut, and technical routes on Mount Fay. That is the provider’s description of its programs, not an independent route assessment or a current conditions report. Confirm current offerings and qualifications directly with any provider.
A 1975 American Alpine Club account records Lawrence E. Nielson’s ascent via the north-face glacier and ice couloirs, reporting a five-hour round trip from Moraine Lake for that historical ascent. That figure describes one past climb under its particular conditions; it is not a present-day itinerary or a useful estimate for the lakeshore trail. The Canadian Rockies Databases lists Mount Fay’s elevation as 3,235 m; this is a secondary-source figure, not a Parks Canada measurement.

Check conditions and safety before you go
Parks Canada advises checking the current Banff trail-conditions report, weather, warnings, and closures before hiking. Its general guidance says prime hiking season runs from July through mid-September, but that is not a guarantee of suitable conditions on a particular day. Snow can persist into summer; snow- or ice-covered trails can make route-finding difficult and unsafe. Parks Canada recommends hiking poles and ice cleats when trails are snowy or icy.
Parks Canada also warns that trails above 2,000 m may face avalanche hazard year-round, especially from November through June. Its wildlife guidance includes keeping dogs leashed and under control where permitted, giving wildlife space, travelling in groups of four or more, staying alert, making noise, and carrying bear spray while knowing how to use it. No single precaution removes mountain or wildlife risk. As Parks Canada puts it: “Your safety is your responsibility.”

Do not confuse it with Consolation Lakes
Consolation Lakes is a separate trail, not the lakeshore route described for viewing Mount Fay. Parks Canada lists Consolation Lakes as 2.9 km one way, with 135 m of elevation gain and an estimated two-hour round trip; its description highlights alpine meadows, scree slopes, and Quadra Glacier. Choose the lakeshore trail when your goal is the straightforward Mount Fay and Fay Glacier viewpoint.
