For the 2024-era PvE setup covered here, build around Sword and Shield with Upheaval, Defender’s Resolve, and either Shield Bash or Shield Rush. Choose heavy armor for a more forgiving survivability-focused approach, or light armor for the damage and mobility suited to speed runs. This is a dated build reference, not a freshly tested 2026 meta recommendation: Amazon Games says New World: Aeternum will go offline on all platforms on January 31, 2027.
What the Sword and Shield tank does
The tank’s job is to keep enemies focused on them while managing damage, positioning, and cooldowns. Blocking helps control incoming damage, but contributing damage also matters because it supports threat generation. The 2024 Icy Veins guide treats Sword and Shield as the primary tank combination for PvE. Icy Veins’ Sword and Shield Tank PvE Build was last updated October 14, 2024.
Choose an armor approach

Set the core Sword and Shield skills

- Shield Rush: Applies Weaken and can provide Fortify with its perk, offering a different mix of utility from Shield Bash.
- Upheaval: Use it after the other two abilities are on cooldown; the guide describes it as a cooldown-reduction tool.
These choices address different needs. Favor Shield Bash for its taunt and control, or Shield Rush when Weaken and perk-enabled Fortify better suit the encounter.

The notes establish these specific mechanics; they do not establish that the rest of a 2024 gear or attribute setup remains optimal. Check the relevant game version and item availability before treating an old recommendation as current.
Pick a secondary weapon for your group’s needs
The 2024 guide names Hatchet, War Hammer, Great Axe, and Greatsword as secondary options. It does not establish one as best for every party or encounter. Choose based on the role you need beyond the sword-and-shield core:

Party composition and encounter demands determine which tradeoff is useful; the cited guides do not provide a universal ranking.
Attributes and the dated sword recommendation
The October 2024 guide says Constitution and armor weight depend on preference and skill. Under its defensive perk and gem assumptions, it says tanks typically do not exceed 200 Constitution, while some players go as low as 50 to maximize damage. Treat those figures as that guide’s recommendation, not a current universal rule.

That guide lists a strength sword with Thwarting Strikes, Refreshing Move, and an expedition-specific Bane perk, plus a Cut Pristine Carnelian gem. This is a specific 2024-era gear recommendation, not verified current best-in-slot gear. Check the game version and whether the item and perks are available before building around it.

- Prioritize survivability and ease of execution? Start with heavy armor and the taunt-and-control option that best fits the fight.
- Running a speed-focused group and comfortable with tighter defensive play? The guide’s light-armor approach favors mobility and burst damage.
- Need more group control or enemy grouping? Consider the secondary weapon options for those roles rather than assuming the same choice suits every encounter.
- Adapting an older setup? Verify shield-specific effects and gear details against the game version you are playing.
How long this advice remains relevant
Amazon Games announced on January 15, 2026, that New World: Aeternum was delisted that day and is scheduled to be taken offline on all platforms on January 31, 2027. The announcement also says the Nighthaven season will be extended until the servers go offline. The game is therefore approaching a stated end-of-service date; this build is best read as a dated guide to its 2024-era setup, qualified by later published mechanics.
