What happened at Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast?
On December 11, 2023, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks told employees that the company planned approximately 1,100 additional global headcount reductions. The memo said these cuts followed roughly 800 reductions already taken. GeekWire reported the announcement the next day and confirmed that Wizards of the Coast staff had posted about being laid off.
GeekWire reported that affected Wizards work included IT-related roles and, in an update, cited employees in multiple departments, including an art director and a Dungeons & Dragons game designer. Hasbro declined to provide the outlet with a detailed account of the impact on Wizards. The memo’s figures are global company totals, not a count of Wizards employees. GeekWire’s December 12, 2023 report and the SEC-filed employee memo do not establish a subsidiary-specific total.
How many Wizards of the Coast employees were laid off?
No comprehensive Wizards of the Coast figure was reported. The approximately 1,100 additional cuts and roughly 800 already taken refer to Hasbro globally; they cannot be used to calculate how many people at Wizards lost their jobs. GeekWire confirmed that Wizards employees were affected, but Hasbro did not give the outlet a detailed subsidiary-level count.

What did CEO Chris Cocks say in the memo?
The memo, dated December 11, 2023, and addressed to “All Company,” attributed the decision to business conditions and organizational changes. Cocks wrote: “The market headwinds we anticipated have proven to be stronger and more persistent than planned.” He cited a downturn from pandemic-driven highs, particularly in toys, and said Hasbro needed to modernize and become leaner. He also said: “While we see workforce reductions as a last resort, given the state of our business, it’s a lever we must pull to keep Hasbro healthy.” These are the company’s stated rationale, not an independent assessment of the causes or effects of the cuts.
Timing and employee support
The memo said the effects would differ by function and that notifications would vary by country because of local consultation rules. Hasbro expected most notices to be delivered over six months, with the balance over the following year. It also described packages that included job-placement support.

Other organizational changes announced
The memo also outlined plans to standardize Finance, HR, IT and Consumer Care processes through a Global Business Enablement project and reduce management layers. Hasbro said it planned to leave its Providence, Rhode Island, office when its lease ended in January 2025 and move those teams to Pawtucket. These were plans described in the 2023 memo; the memo alone does not establish their later status.

Hasbro reported strong Wizards and Digital Gaming results in 2026: revenue increased 26% year over year in Q1 and 27% in Q2. The company also said quarterly Magic: The Gathering revenue exceeded $500 million for the first time in the franchise’s 30-plus-year history. These are later company-reported results, not evidence that explains the 2023 layoffs or demonstrates whether the cuts caused or affected subsequent performance.
