Ghostface is a playable guest fighter in Mortal Kombat 1, designed as a close-range brawler and grappler who mixes knife attacks and throws with assists from other figures wearing the Ghostface identity. The character is downloadable content, so you need the base game plus a purchase or package that includes Ghostface.
Who is Ghostface in Mortal Kombat 1?
NetherRealm based its version chiefly on the original Scream, whose killer identity is shared by two people. In Mortal Kombat 1, the mask stays on during ordinary fights; cinematic Fatal Blows and finishers reveal Billy Loomis, whom the developers identify as the canon Ghostface for those sequences. NetherRealm Combat Designer Joe Epstein described the character’s arrival in a PlayStation Blog interview published November 18, 2024.

Making the outfit readable in motion posed a design challenge: the costume is mostly flowing cloth, with long trailing fringe. NetherRealm says it worked to preserve clear movement during fast-paced fights. Roger L. Jackson returned to voice Ghostface, reprising his recurring role from the films. The game also gives the character Fatalities, an Animality and Brutalities.
How does Ghostface play?
NetherRealm Principal Designer Paulo Garcia described the character as a brawler and grappler, potentially the most throw-oriented fighter on the roster when the team discussed the design in November 2024. Knives matter, but Ghostface is not presented as a straightforward zoning character: the developers also highlighted lunges, pounces, a low slithering attack, grabs and partner assists. Garcia explained the design in an Xbox Wire interview published November 18, 2024.

Backstage Pass
Ghostface briefly leaves the fight, then reappears on either side of the screen. The move draws on the horror-film trope of a killer emerging from a hidden passage, while giving the character a way to change position.
Always Outnumbered
Ghostface uses a brick-style cordless phone to call in another Ghostface, who appears behind the opponent to attack. The assist turns the franchise’s multiple-killer premise into a combat mechanic.

Partner hand-offs and close-range pressure
Other Ghostface figures can temporarily take over, and background partners have different specialties. Combined with knife lunges, pounces and grab sequences inspired by the films, the hand-offs make the partner mechanic part of the character’s offense rather than just a visual reference.
These are the developers’ descriptions of Ghostface’s design, not a current competitive ranking or a claim about strength after particular balance patches.

How to get Ghostface and what you need
Mortal Kombat 1 is required to play the Ghostface DLC. The official FAQ says the game is available physically and digitally for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. A physical copy of the base game is not the Ghostface DLC: you must also obtain the character through a separate character purchase or an eligible package. The official FAQ sets out the current package options and platform details.
| Route | What it includes | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Buy Ghostface individually | Ghostface character DLC | Individual Kombat Pack 2 characters are separately purchasable; you still need the base game. |
| Khaos Reigns Expansion | Khaos Reigns expansion and Kombat Pack 2, which includes Ghostface | Requires ownership of Mortal Kombat 1. The official FAQ describes the expansion as digital only. |
| Definitive Edition Upgrade | Definitive Edition content for owners of the base game, including Kombat Pack 2 | Confirm the upgrade’s platform and current store listing before buying. |
| Definitive Edition | Main game, Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack and Kombat Pack 2, among other content | The complete edition includes the base game as well as Ghostface’s pack. |
Kombat Pack 2 is not sold as a standalone bundle, according to the FAQ. If you already own the game and want only Ghostface, look for the individual character listing; if you want the story expansion or broader collection, compare the eligible package contents first. Store listings and prices may vary by platform and region.

The announcement also gave dated suggested retail prices for the Definitive Edition: $69.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and $59.99 on Switch. Those are announcement SRPs, not live quotes; check your regional store for current pricing.
