There is no verified, all-platform ranking that establishes which JRPG has the most reviews of all time. The answer depends on what you count: critic reviews or player reviews, which database or storefront you use, and whether separate releases and editions are combined. A high review count also does not mean a game has the highest score.
What “most reviewed” can mean
Review volume and review score are separate measures. A game can have many reviews without having the highest score, and a high score alone does not establish that it has the most reviews.
- Critic-review count: reviews collected by an aggregator such as Metacritic’s JRPG browse.
- Player-review count: reviews submitted on a particular storefront, such as Steam. Steam describes its system as a way for players to share their experience and indicate whether they recommend a game (Steam Support’s User Reviews explanation).
- Player sentiment: a recommendation percentage or other score. This describes the share or rating of reviews, not how many reviews exist.
These are different evidence sets. Their counts should not be added together or presented as one universal total without a transparent method.
What the available rankings can establish
Metacritic offers a JRPG genre browse and an all-time metascore view, but a score-ordered list is not a ranking by review count. Its all-time JRPG metascore browse is useful for looking at critic scores within its genre classification; it does not establish which game has accumulated the most reviews.

- Your Fantasy Japanese Life; Experience Japanese-inspired character designs from festivals and events to monsters

SteamDB’s JRPG-tag ratings filter is another bounded view: it filters Steam games using Steam’s JRPG tag and a minimum-review threshold. A community or platform tag is not a universally agreed definition of the genre, and that filter is not a count across every platform or review source.
As a result, the available pages do not support naming a definitive all-time leader across critics, storefronts, platforms, languages, and editions. Any credible “most reviewed” list needs to state its counting method and scope.

A concrete example: Persona 5 Royal on Steam
Persona 5 Royal’s Steam listing describes it as a stylish turn-based RPG and displays the JRPG tag. It identifies ATLUS as developer, SEGA as publisher, and 20 October 2022 as the Steam release date.
The listing showed approximately 36,000 English reviews in a Steam result rendering accessed in 2026. That is an approximate, platform- and language-specific snapshot, not a stable lifetime total or an all-platform rank. The live count can change; use the listing itself and record the date if reporting a precise figure.

How to compare JRPG review counts fairly
A useful comparison ranks one consistent measure at a time and makes its boundaries visible. For each entry, specify:
- Whether the count is for critics or players, and the database or storefront providing it.
- The game’s platform, release, and edition; a remake or enhanced edition may have a separate page and review pool.
- The collection date for storefront counts, which can change over time.
- Whether the list ranks review volume, score, or recommendation percentage.
There is no normalized method established by these sources for merging review pools across platforms or editions. A storefront-specific list can still be informative, but it should be labeled as a snapshot for that storefront rather than an all-time total.
