Neverwinter is a free-to-play action MMORPG set in Dungeons & Dragons’ Forgotten Realms. It is worth trying if you want a low-cost entry into a D&D-themed online RPG with action combat; whether it is worth sticking with depends on how much you enjoy its ongoing progression and how much time you want to invest. This is the MMORPG, not the separate Neverwinter Nights RPG series.
What kind of game is Neverwinter?
Cryptic Studios developed Neverwinter, and Arc Games publishes it. The game launched on Steam on December 5, 2013. Steam describes it as a free-to-play action MMORPG based on Dungeons & Dragons, with in-app purchases. That makes it easy to try without buying the base game, but the listing alone does not establish whether paid items are necessary or how much grinding later progression requires. Steam store listing.
What do players think of it?
In the English-language Steam snapshot available on October 8, 2026, 74% of 18,927 reviews were positive, giving the game a “Mostly Positive” all-time label. Recent English-language reviews were less favorable: 64% of 81 reviews were positive, labeled “Mixed.” These are Steam user-review figures, not critic scores or a measure of all players, and the smaller recent sample can change as reviews accumulate. One Steam player-review excerpt praises its “fast-paced combat” and “streamlined design,” describing it as a strong example of an action MMO. That is an individual player’s opinion, not a professional review or a developer statement. Steam player review.

Be cautious if you want a quick route to endgame
Community discussions include conflicting accounts: some commenters find the game enjoyable or viable for returning players, while others raise concerns about grinding, access to advanced endgame content, and a weaker sense of community. Those are anecdotal impressions, not representative player research or proof of current population levels. Treat them as questions to investigate as you play rather than settled facts.
