Beating the Ender Dragon is a major milestone, not a finish line. If you’re wondering what to do after beating the Ender Dragon, you can keep exploring the End, take on tougher structures, collect rare items, or turn your world into a building project. There’s no required next step: choose the kind of challenge or goal you enjoy.
Explore the End and improve how you travel
1. Search the outer islands for an End City and ship
After the dragon fight, use an End gateway to reach the End’s outer islands and look for an End City. Cities and their ships offer distinct exploration goals, and finding one gives you a reason to venture farther into the dimension. Minecraft’s End City guide describes the route to the outer islands and what players can find there.
2. Find an elytra
An End ship is where the official guide points players looking for an elytra. Getting one changes how you move through the world: instead of relying only on ground routes, you can use flight to make travel and scouting feel different. The guide’s heading calls the End ship “The only place you’ll find an elytra”; treat that as the guide’s framing rather than a guarantee about every version or platform.
3. Collect shulker shells and make shulker boxes
Shulkers inhabit End Cities, and their shells can be used to craft shulker boxes. These boxes give collectors another reason to explore city structures, while shulker encounters add a combat wrinkle to the trip. Minecraft’s shulker article covers the mob and its End City connection; the End City guide identifies shells as a reward to seek.

Take on challenging structures
4. Enter a Trial Chamber
Trial Chambers are underground combat structures built around trial spawners and vaults. They offer a contained challenge for players who want encounters and rewards rather than a long journey through open terrain. A cartographer may sell a trial explorer map to help locate one. Minecraft’s Trial Chamber guide explains the structure; its release-note details for trial chambers are specifically for Java Edition 1.21, so check the rules for your own edition and version.
5. Explore an ancient city
Ancient cities are ruins in the deep dark biome, with loot chests among their structures. Treat the journey as a stealth-and-exploration challenge: prepare for a hazardous underground area, move carefully, and decide whether the contents of a chest are worth the risk. Minecraft Help’s rare structures reference describes ancient cities and their location.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
6. Raid an ocean monument
Ocean monuments are deep-ocean structures guarded by guardians and elder guardians. Exploring one gives you a different kind of challenge from an underground dungeon, and Minecraft Help names sponges and prismarine blocks among the rewards. Plan around the underwater setting and the hostile defenders rather than treating the monument as an ordinary building to loot.
7. Search for a Nether fortress or bastion
These Nether structures offer different encounters and reasons to explore. Fortresses are associated with blazes, wither skeletons, and Nether wart; bastions are associated with piglins, hoglins, and treasure. Choose a fortress if those mobs and resources are your goal, or a bastion if you want to hunt for its treasure. Minecraft Help’s structure reference outlines their distinguishing features.

Set your own goals
8. Fight the Ender Dragon again
If you enjoyed the boss fight—or want another challenge in the End—you can respawn the dragon. Minecraft’s Ender Update changelog lists dragon respawning as an available feature. Consider it a self-directed rematch, not a mandatory step in a fixed progression.
9. Find rare biomes and collect plants or flowers
Make exploration the goal itself: travel in search of biomes you have not visited, then collect plants or flowers you want to bring back to your base. This is a lower-pressure alternative to structure hunting, and it can give you materials or inspiration for landscaping and decorating. Minecraft’s Trial Chamber feature article includes rare-biome exploration and plant collecting among the goals players may pursue after establishing basic survival infrastructure.

Once you have a home and food supply, you can make the world itself your project. Improve a modest base room by room, or build something much larger—a castle or palace, for example. The scale is up to you; there is no required blueprint or endgame checklist. Minecraft’s feature article explicitly presents upgrading a home as one possible direction for established players.
