Tuff is a stone-like Minecraft block used mainly for building and decoration. It generates underground and can be collected by mining it with a pickaxe. In Java Edition 1.21, it also appears in Trial Chambers and has a broader set of decorative variants, including polished and brick forms.
What does Tuff do in Minecraft?
Tuff is primarily a building and decoration block. Its muted, stone-like look can add texture to walls, floors, and other builds. It has no special utility role established by the sources cited here.
Java Edition 1.21 expanded the family of Tuff building blocks. The official Minecraft Java Edition 1.21 changelog lists these forms:
- Tuff, including stairs, slabs, walls, and chiseled Tuff.
- Polished Tuff, including stairs, slabs, and walls.
- Tuff Bricks, including stairs, slabs, walls, and chiseled Tuff Bricks.
The changelog says all Tuff variants can be made in a Stonecutter, making it a practical way to shape the material for a build.

Natural Tuff generates underground. An exact Y-level range is not established here, so the reliable general answer is to look below the surface rather than rely on a particular depth.
In Java Edition 1.21, Tuff is also used in Trial Chambers. The official release notes place these Overworld structures in the Deepslate layer and describe them as “A relatively common find throughout the Deepslate layer of the underground.” They are built from Copper and Tuff blocks. This information is specific to the Java 1.21 release notes and should not be treated as a verified location description for every edition or later version.
How do you get Tuff?
Mine natural Tuff
- Find Tuff underground.
- Mine the block with a pickaxe. The Minecraft Wiki says Tuff drops itself when mined with a pickaxe; see its Tuff entry.
Explore a Trial Chamber
Trial Chambers contain Tuff as part of their construction in Java Edition 1.21, so exploring one can provide another opportunity to encounter the block. Chambers also involve combat challenges, so this route is exploration rather than a shortcut to collecting Tuff.
A Journeyman Cartographer may offer a Trial Explorer Map, which is used to locate a nearby Trial Chamber. The official changelog describes this as a possible trade, not a guaranteed purchase.
Which Tuff form should you use?
Choose the form that fits the finish and shape of your build: base Tuff for a rough stone look, Polished Tuff for a smoother finish, and Tuff Bricks for a more regular masonry pattern. Stairs, slabs, walls, and chiseled variants let you carry those styles into edges and details. Use a Stonecutter to make the documented variants.
