Need a nudge for the New York Times Connections puzzle from January 30, 2025? These graduated hints for game #599 start vague and get more specific; the full four groups and all 16 answers are below a clear spoiler break.

Hints for Connections #599

Try each clue before moving on to the next. The hints progress from the broad theme toward the wordplay.

  1. Green: Think of food and drink associated with watching or attending a game.
  2. Yellow: Think of an intangible quality, presence, or impression.
  3. Blue: These words can be followed by “on” in the phrase “keep going on about.”
  4. Purple: Look for words that begin with European capital names.

Spoilers: the answers for January 30, 2025

The four groups below are the complete solution for game #599.

Color Category Four tiles
Green GAME DAY FARE BEER, DIP, PIZZA, WINGS
Yellow INTANGIBLE QUALITY AIR, AURA, HALO, VIBE
Blue KEEP GOING ON ABOUT, WITH “ON” DWELL, HARP, INSIST, LINGER
Purple STARTING WITH EUROPEAN CAPITALS BERNIE, PARISH, RIGATONI, ROMEO

Why the trickiest groups fit

Purple: capital names at the start

The purple category uses the beginnings of European capital names, rather than the names of the capitals themselves: BERNIE starts with BER (Berlin), PARISH with PAR (Paris), RIGATONI with RIGA (Riga), and ROMEO with ROM (Rome).

Blue: phrases ending in “on”

Each blue word can fit the construction “_____ on about [a subject]”: dwell on, harp on, insist on, and linger on.

A tempting angel-themed false lead

WINGS, HALO, and HARP may suggest an angel-related set, but they do not form one of the four complete groups. The puzzle’s answer set includes all 16 tiles in four groups of four, so a promising-looking trio still needs a fourth word that fits the same connection.
