Why these words fit
Yellow: FIRST ___
First aid is immediate help for someone who is ill or injured; a first lady is a title associated with the spouse of a head of state or government; First Nations refers to Indigenous peoples in Canada; and a first responder is among the people who respond first to an emergency.
Green: SECOND ___
A second coming is a return or reappearance; to play second fiddle is to take a subordinate role; to second-guess is to question a decision or action; and second nature describes something that has become instinctive through familiarity.
Rank #2
Blue: THIRD ___
A third eye is a concept associated with spiritual perception; a third party is someone or something outside the two main parties in a situation; the third rail is a highly dangerous or politically sensitive subject; and Third Rock refers to Earth, the third planet from the Sun.
Purple: LAST ___
The last laugh is a final triumph; a last resort is an option used when others have failed or are unavailable; the last straw is the final aggravation that makes a situation intolerable; and the Last Supper is the final meal Jesus shared with his apostles before his crucifixion.
Rank #3
What makes the puzzle tricky
The words are not grouped by a single obvious subject. Instead, each set becomes clear when paired with a position word. That makes the short words especially tempting: eye, party, rail and rock can suggest several unrelated ideas until the shared phrase pattern emerges. Check whether a candidate completes one of the four phrases before committing it to a group.
