How Connections works
Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared theme. The groups are color-coded yellow, green, blue, and purple, with yellow intended to be easiest and purple trickiest. The New York Times Help Center notes that words may seem to fit more than one theme, but each puzzle has one solution: Connections help.
