- EMULATE: COPY, ECHO, MIRROR, PARROT
- MANIA: BUG, CRAZE, FAD, FEVER
- SPORTS: CRICKET, GOLF, POLO, SQUASH
- SINGLE ANIMAL IN A CREATIVELY SPELLED BAND NAME: BEETLE, BIRD, GORILLA, MONKEY
Why the animal words are a trap
The purple group takes one animal word from each of four creatively spelled band names: BEETLE points to The Beatles, BIRD to The Byrds, GORILLA to Gorillaz, and MONKEY to The Monkees. The animal words do not all belong together: CRICKET is in SPORTS, while BUG is in MANIA. PARROT goes with the imitation words.
Forbes contributor Erik Kain noted, “They tried to fool us with the animals today.” That is his reaction to the puzzle’s decoys, not an official NYT description.
