Need for Speed Unbound is worth considering if you want a current-generation arcade street racer built around risky races, police pursuits, car customization and a striking graffiti-inspired visual style. Critics generally liked its driving and presentation, but the single-player story drew more mixed reactions. One important buying caveat: EA said updates ended on February 3, 2025. That is not the same as an announcement that online servers have shut down.
What kind of game is Need for Speed Unbound?
Released in 2022, Need for Speed Unbound is a street racer set in Lakeshore, where you race, evade police and build toward The Grand. Its story unfolds across four weeks of racing and weekly qualifiers, with separate single-player and multiplayer campaigns, according to EA’s game description.

The defining contrast is visual: cars and environments have a relatively realistic look, while effects inspired by graffiti and street art make jumps, acceleration and other moments feel more stylized. The music identity includes a soundtrack led by A$AP Rocky and AWGE, alongside a score by Brodinski, as described on the PlayStation game page. That combination gives Unbound a more distinctive personality than a straightforward simulation racer, though the look and sound are likely to be a matter of taste.
What do critics say about Need for Speed Unbound?
On Metacritic’s PS5 page, the game had a score of 77/100 from 54 critic reviews in the page snapshot accessed in 2026. Metacritic classified 36 reviews as positive (68%), 17 as mixed (32%), and none as negative. Is Need for Speed Unbound still getting updates?
No further game updates or changes are planned. In its End of Kaizen Review, published February 3, 2025, EA said: “Since we’re at the end of live service on Unbound, we won’t be updating the game or making any more changes, but rest assured your notes and comments are being captured and will help inform the future.”
That announcement establishes the end of updates; it does not say that online servers have shut down. If multiplayer is central to your decision, check EA’s current service status before buying, since the update announcement alone cannot confirm whether online play is available today.

Platforms, cross-play and progress
EA lists Need for Speed Unbound for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. EA Help says cross-play spans those platforms and is enabled by default. However, game progress and content do not transfer when you switch platforms. Choose the platform you expect to keep using, particularly if you plan to invest time in either campaign. Which edition should you buy?
EA and PlayStation list different editions, but prices and bundles can vary by region and store. Check the listing for your platform before purchasing rather than assuming an edition includes the same extras everywhere.

EA’s purchase page notes optional purchases of virtual currency. That notice does not mean virtual currency is required to play, and it should not be confused with the content included in an edition. For PS5, PlayStation also describes DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback for effects such as acceleration slips, jumps and nitrous. A DualSense controller is a way to experience those features, not an additional requirement.

EA announced 4K resolution at 60 FPS on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC at launch, describing it as a first for the series. This is a publisher launch-era specification, not a guarantee that every PC configuration will run at that resolution and frame rate. Check the game’s current system requirements and your hardware before buying on PC.
