Pixelmon adds wild creatures to find, turn-based battles, breeding, trading and gym challenges, and the current releases run on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge. The mod shines on a shared server, where friends can trade Pokémon, battle it out in tournaments and build a town full of gyms. All those animated creatures make it far heavier than vanilla Minecraft, though, so the host matters.
Our verdict: for most groups, Godlike.Host is the strongest Pixelmon host, thanks to one-click setup, memory advice written for Pixelmon and backups at no cost. BerryByte suits groups that want Pixelmon’s recommended build installed for them, WinterNode delivers a fully preinstalled server, PebbleHost lets you pick between Pixelmon Reforged, Generations and Cobblemon, and Kinetic Hosting offers the quickest processors on paper.
What a Pixelmon server needs
Pixelmon’s own website and wiki set out the essentials:
- The recommended build. For Minecraft 1.21.1, that is Pixelmon 9.3.16 on NeoForge 21.1.200. A 9.4.1 beta is available, but it expects a newer NeoForge and is meant for testers.
- Java 21. Releases from 9.3.0 onward require it, and the wiki warns that other Java versions simply will not work.
- Memory above the floor. The wiki’s minimum is 4 GB allocated to the server, with more preferred, and it strongly recommends paid hosting once a server grows.
- Identical versions. Clients on a different Pixelmon version than the server are refused with a mod rejection error.
1. Godlike.Host: best overall for Pixelmon
Godlike.Host sets up the Pixelmon Modpack in one click on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge and Java 21, and its requirements card puts the memory at 6 GB. Its sizing advice scales sensibly: a small group usually gets by on 4 to 6 GB, while busier servers, with more players, heavy exploring or a hub that hosts tournaments, should start at 8 GB. The FAQ also spells out why version discipline matters, since players on a different modpack version or loader will hit missing or mismatched mod errors.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Customizing is allowed, within reason. Godlike suggests adding mods built for the same loader and version, one at a time, testing after each and rolling back if anything breaks. Backups cost nothing, with up to three taken each day, attack protection is standard, and you can choose from 10 server locations spread over North America, Europe and Singapore. Its Pixelmon page describes exactly the world a server is for: friends exploring together, trading in a shared hub and building towns, gyms and tournament arenas.
Heads-up: the page names the Minecraft version but not the Pixelmon build, so confirm the installed release in the panel and pass it on to your players before they download.
2. BerryByte: best for the recommended Pixelmon build
BerryByte leaves no room for confusion. After checkout it installs The Pixelmon Modpack 9.3.16 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, and its page says plainly that this is neither Cobblemon nor the 9.4 beta. That is the release Pixelmon recommends, so your friends know exactly what to download. Switching from another host is easy too: send a backup and BerryByte moves your world and settings without charging extra, and backups come with every plan.
BerryByte also sizes more generously than most, starting small groups at 8 GB and suggesting 12 GB once several players are exploring and battling with lots of Pokémon loaded. New purchases can be refunded in full within seven days.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. WinterNode: best for a fully preinstalled server
WinterNode locks Pixelmon in when you order and preinstalls the modpack with every NeoForge mod it needs, leaving nothing to upload: the server can be joined as soon as it starts. It pre-selects 8 GB and describes the pack as comfortable on 6 to 8 GB, with player numbers and view distance deciding where in that range you land. Its page also counts more than 19 million CurseForge downloads for the modpack.
Each plan keeps a backup twice a day, never throttles the processor and puts no meter on disk space or MySQL databases. Moving up a size later is billed only for the remaining part of the month.
Heads-up: WinterNode lists version 9.3.14, two builds behind the 9.3.16 that Pixelmon recommends, so make sure every player downloads the server’s exact build.

4. PebbleHost: best for choosing your Pokémon mod
PebbleHost frames its page around choice: one-click installs for Pixelmon Reforged and Pixelmon Generations, with Cobblemon supported too. It is unusually frank about memory, calling 4 GB the absolute minimum for a private server of two to five players and 8 to 10 GB the sweet spot for smooth play. The Premium range is built around AMD Ryzen 9 9900X processors, with other chips in some regions, picked for single-thread speed because Minecraft handles Pokémon AI and battle maths on one main thread.
Heads-up: PebbleHost’s lower-cost Budget tier lists no backups and no modpack installer, which pushes a Pixelmon community onto Premium.

5. Kinetic Hosting: best for top-end processors
Kinetic Hosting’s version of The Pixelmon Modpack comes with extras: a custom Pixelmon soundtrack, the Oh The Biomes You’ll Go world generator and navigation aids such as JourneyMap, Nature’s Compass and Explorer’s Compass. You add the pack through Kinetic’s own panel once the order goes through. Its fastest machines use Ryzen 9 9950X chips that boost to 5.7 GHz, there is no cap on players, you get five backup slots, the panel alerts you to crashes, and every server starts with 60 GB of storage that grows free of charge within fair use.
Heads-up: Kinetic recommends 12 GB for Pixelmon, the largest figure here, and does not name the Pixelmon build on its page.

Sizing a Pixelmon server
The Pixelmon wiki’s floor is 4 GB of allocated memory, with more preferred, and hosts build up from there. Godlike.Host puts a small group at 4 to 6 GB and a busy server at 8 GB or more, WinterNode pre-selects 8 GB, PebbleHost names 8 to 10 GB as the sweet spot, and BerryByte and Kinetic Hosting both go up to 12 GB for active communities.
For a practical starting point, give a handful of friends 6 GB, move to 8 GB once regular battles and a shared hub appear, and plan for 10 to 12 GB if you run tournaments or keep many Pokémon loaded at once. Remember that memory is only half the story. Every wild spawn and battle animation lands on the same main thread, so when battles stutter while RAM sits unused, the processor is the bottleneck, and a host with faster cores will help more than a bigger plan.

Getting your Pixelmon server online
- Decide on the mod and version. Pixelmon 9.3.16 on Minecraft 1.21.1 is the safe default; Cobblemon is a different mod entirely.
- Order a plan above the official minimum, hosted close to where most of your players live.
- Install the modpack with the host’s installer, or let a host such as WinterNode or BerryByte preinstall it.
- Check the build the server reports and share it with your group.
- Turn on the whitelist for a private server and add your friends.
- Have everyone install the same modpack with the CurseForge app, ATLauncher or a similar launcher, then connect through Multiplayer.
Running gyms, trades and tournaments
Pixelmon servers come alive with structure. Many groups set aside a shared hub near spawn for trading, give each regular player a gym type to build and defend, and run tournament nights with agreed rules about levels and legendary Pokémon. A central hub also keeps the busiest activity in one area, which is kinder to the server than everyone battling at the far edges of the map. Back up before a big event, so a crash or a disputed result never costs anyone their team.
Moving an existing Pixelmon world
Changing hosts does not mean losing your Pokédex progress. BerryByte offers to move your world and settings for free if you send a backup, and on any other host the job is manageable yourself: stop the old server, download the world folder along with the Pixelmon configuration folder so your spawn and battle settings survive, set up the same Pixelmon build on the new server, then upload the files and check that everyone’s team is intact before anyone plays. Hold on to the old server for a few days, just in case a file was left behind.
Plugins on a modern Pixelmon server
Groups coming from plugin-based servers should adjust their expectations. Bukkit-style plugins need a hybrid server, and Pixelmon’s official guide limits the Arclight hybrid to Minecraft 1.16.x and 1.20.1, stating that it does not work with Pixelmon 9.2.4 or later. On a current 1.21.1 server, extra features come from mods and Pixelmon sidemods instead, so choose a host whose panel makes uploading mod files easy.
Signs your Pixelmon server needs more power
- Battles hesitate between turns, or animations stutter when several fights run at once.
- Wild spawns thin out or freeze near busy areas such as the trading hub.
- Memory sits at its limit in the panel and the server restarts on its own.
- Joining takes far longer than it used to, especially at peak times.
Check the processor first if memory has room to spare, and step up a plan if it does not.
Pixelmon or Cobblemon?
The two are often mixed up, but they are separate mods. Current Pixelmon runs on NeoForge, while Cobblemon is a different Pokémon mod with official packs of its own. As BerryByte notes, a Pixelmon client cannot join a Cobblemon server, so settle the question before anyone starts downloading. If your group is torn, PebbleHost’s page covers both.
