Netflix closed Boss Fight Entertainment in October 2025, the studio behind Squid Game: Unleashed and Netflix Stories. Reuters reported the closure on October 24, citing confirmation from Boss Fight co-founder and former CEO David Rippy. The games were reported to remain available on Netflix immediately afterward; that did not guarantee continued availability everywhere or on every device.
What happened to Boss Fight Entertainment?
Boss Fight was a game studio acquired by Netflix in 2022. Netflix shut it down in October 2025. Reuters reported that Rippy confirmed the closure in a LinkedIn post. He wrote, “Rough news, for sure, but I’m very grateful for the time we had at Netflix.”
David Luehmann, a director of game development at Boss Fight, also announced the closure on LinkedIn, saying: “After 10+ great years working at Boss Fight, the last few as part of Netflix, the time has come for the studio to close down.” Reuters reported that Netflix had not immediately responded to its request for comment. Reuters via Investing.com and Engadget covered the closure on October 24, 2025.
What happens to Squid Game: Unleashed and Netflix Stories?
Contemporaneous reports said Squid Game: Unleashed and Netflix Stories would remain available on Netflix after the studio closed. Closing a developer is not the same as immediately withdrawing its games. However, that reported post-closure status is not a current availability check: the reports do not establish whether either game is available now in every country or on every device.

Why did Netflix close Boss Fight?
Netflix has not provided a specific reason for the closure in the reviewed reporting. The available coverage does not establish that it was caused by poor performance, a particular budget decision, or a disagreement over strategy. Rippy confirmed the closure, but his post did not supply a company explanation.
At the time, reporting described Netflix’s games division as shifting its emphasis toward party, narrative, kids, and mainstream games, including games played directly on TVs. Netflix acquired Boss Fight in 2022 as part of its expansion into games; that context does not prove why the studio was later closed.

In a statement reported by PC Gamer in August 2026, a Netflix spokesperson cited Kids, Party, Narrative, and Mainstream as focus areas and highlighted momentum in cloud and kids games. Those comments describe the company’s later priorities, not a confirmed explanation for the Boss Fight decision. PC Gamer reported the statement on August 13, 2026.

Engadget reported a figure of more than 10 million Google Play downloads for Squid Game: Unleashed, citing Mobilegamer. That is a secondary-reported Google Play figure, not a Netflix-confirmed total or a count of players across all platforms; it should not be read as the game’s current audience.
