A Nether Fortress is a large Nether structure associated with nether brick, blazes, wither skeletons, and nether wart. It can supply resources needed for progression toward the End, but its bridges and corridors expose players to hostile mobs, lava, falls, and ghast attacks. There is no guaranteed finding method established by the official sources cited here; an older Mojang navigation tip is only a probabilistic clue.
How to recognize a Nether Fortress
Look for a sprawling structure built from dark red nether brick, including walls, pillars, bridges, and corridors. Nether brick occurs naturally in fortress walls and pillars, and the structure is associated with blazes, wither skeletons, and nether wart. Mojang’s Nether Brick article also discusses fortress chests and resources, but no particular chest item should be treated as guaranteed.
Fortresses can extend across hazardous open spaces as well as enclosed passages, so a glimpse of nether brick may lead to a larger connected structure rather than a single room.
What you can find there—and why it matters
Blazes and blaze rods
Blazes are found only in Nether fortresses and usually originate from a monster spawner, according to Mojang’s Blaze article. Defeating blazes can yield blaze rods, which can be turned into blaze powder. Mojang’s Dragon’s Breath article describes a common progression route: obtain blaze powder, make Eyes of Ender, and use them to locate a stronghold on the way to the End. This is a useful route, not a claim that every player must follow one exact progression.

Wither skeletons and nether wart
Wither skeletons spawn naturally in fortresses, and nether wart can be found there. Wither skeletons are dangerous opponents; their drops and nether wart are among the reasons players may explore even after locating a fortress.
For a concise official description of fortress features, see Minecraft Help’s biome and structure guide. Loot and resources vary; finding a fortress does not guarantee a specific chest item or drop.

How to look for a fortress
No guaranteed modern locator, fixed distance, or edition-specific coordinate rule is established by the official sources cited here. Mojang published a directional suggestion in 2016, so treat it as a historical search heuristic rather than a verified rule for current world generation.

Use the Soul Sand texture only as a compass clue. Mojang’s 2016 Soul Sand article says the paired circles on the block’s top texture point west.

Try traveling west or east from your starting area. That article says fortresses tend to run north–south and recommends moving west or east to improve the chance of finding one. It does not guarantee a result, and the cited guidance does not establish that this pattern applies to every current edition or version.
-
If you find one, keep searching north or south if you need another. The same article says other fortresses may be a few hundred blocks north or south of one already found. Treat that as an approximate historical observation, not a promised spacing.

In practice, keep a record of your portal and exploration route so you can return safely, and scan from safe positions before crossing exposed bridges. These are navigation precautions, not a substitute for a guaranteed locator.
What makes fortress exploration dangerous
- Blazes: Their fireballs can hit across open spans and make spawners hazardous to approach.
- Wither skeletons: They may appear in corridors and on bridges, where retreat can be difficult.
- Falls and lava: Unexpected drops, exposed walkways, and nearby lava can turn a fight or wrong turn into a costly loss.
- Ghasts and dead ends: Ghast attacks can threaten exposed routes, while fortress passages may end without a useful exit. Mojang names these hazards in its Nether visit guide.
Move deliberately through unfamiliar sections and avoid treating a fortress as a safe base simply because its corridors are enclosed.

Nether Fortress vs. bastion remnant
These are different Nether structures, not interchangeable names. Minecraft Help lists fortresses and bastions separately; its descriptions provide these practical distinctions:
| Feature | Nether Fortress | Bastion remnant |
|---|---|---|
| Associated inhabitants or threats | Blazes and wither skeletons | Piglins and hoglins; a magma cube spawner may also be present |
| Associated resources or features | Nether wart; nether brick in walls and pillars | Large castle-like structure; expected loot depends on the specific bastion |
| Biome context | Can occur in Nether biomes | Can appear in Nether biomes except basalt deltas |
The inhabitants and biome details come from Minecraft Help’s structure guide; Mojang’s Nether visit guide describes the Nether as having several biomes where fortresses and bastions may occur. Which structure is more useful depends on what you are looking for: blaze-related progression and nether wart point toward a fortress, while bastions have different inhabitants and features.
