Mega Dimension adds a paid story expansion to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, sending Team MZ through portals into Hyperspace Lumiose. It brings unfamiliar Pokémon, new Mega Evolutions and a preparation-and-exploration loop that may feel roguelike—but Nintendo and The Pokémon Company do not officially describe it as a roguelike.
What is Mega Dimension?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension is a paid expansion whose story begins after the main story of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Spatial distortions appear around Lumiose City, and Team MZ investigates them with Ansha and the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa. Hoopa can turn the distortions into portals to Hyperspace Lumiose, an altered version of the city. The expansion uses the same save data as the base game. The Pokémon Company’s announcement explains the story setup and prerequisite.
Hyperspace Lumiose resembles Lumiose but contains Pokémon not normally found there, including rare species and newly discovered Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Some encounters have hyperspace levels that push Pokémon above the normal level-100 limit; the official description establishes that they can exceed 100, but does not specify a maximum. The Pokémon Company’s DLC details describe the portals, new encounters and level mechanic.
Is Mega Dimension roguelike?
“Roguelike” is a useful comparison for the expedition-like rhythm, not an official genre label in the publisher and platform-holder materials. The documented loop involves preparing with effect-granting donuts, entering Hyperspace Lumiose, exploring and facing its Pokémon. That can suggest a roguelike-style excursion, but the official descriptions do not establish procedurally generated runs, permadeath or randomized maps. Those features should not be assumed.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
How donuts and Hyperspace Berries affect expeditions
Ansha is a donut chef who uses Berries to make donuts with different effects, including powering up Pokémon. More potent Hyperspace Berries help prepare for the high-level Pokémon found in Hyperspace Lumiose. The donut system is the clearest documented preparation mechanic: choose useful effects before taking on the challenges beyond the portals. Nintendo’s Mega Dimension overview also introduces Korrina as part of the adventure.
New Mega Evolutions and Pokémon
Nintendo’s overview identifies Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur among the new Mega-Evolved Pokémon in the expansion.
