NBA 2K14 earned favorable reviews for its realistic basketball, tactical AI, presentation, and more involving My Career mode. The praise came with caveats: some reviewers saw a modest step over NBA 2K13, disliked how attribute upgrades worked, and evaluated a particular platform edition. Online-dependent features are not a dependable reason to buy it now.
What did reviewers think of NBA 2K14?
Critics generally regarded NBA 2K14 as a strong basketball simulation for its time. GameSpot’s Tom Mc Shea gave the game 8/10 (“Great”) in a review published December 9, 2013. He praised lifelike play, tactical player behavior, visuals, and the more involving career presentation, while pointing to limitations in character interactions and progression.

Metacritic’s page, observed in 2026, displayed an 84 Metascore from 26 critic reviews and a separate 5.8 user score from 201 ratings. What did reviewers praise?
On-court realism and tactical AI
GameSpot highlighted realistic player reactions and tactical behavior. Metacritic’s critic-review excerpts also describe smooth controls and play, along with a broad range of modes. Together, these points explain why the game’s core basketball was its strongest part of the critical case; they do not mean every platform edition played identically.

Presentation and My Career
GameSpot found that story sequences made My Career more involving. Its scorecard also recognized the visuals and AI tactics. That praise concerns the mode’s narrative framing, not an unqualified endorsement of every progression choice.

Progression could feel detached from performance
GameSpot objected to attribute upgrades being bought with points rather than developing organically through a player’s on-court performance. The upgrade over NBA 2K13 could seem modest
Some Metacritic-excerpted critics described NBA 2K14 as a relatively small step over NBA 2K13. The evidence supports that as a criticism some reviewers made, not a comprehensive head-to-head verdict for every platform or player.
Why the platform edition matters
NBA 2K14 launched in stages, and the platforms should not be treated as interchangeable. 2K announced PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC availability on October 1, 2013. North American retail editions for PS4 and Xbox One followed on November 15 and November 22, 2013, respectively. The publisher’s launch materials describe features including Pro Stick, Signature Skills, gameplay refinements, Dynamic Living Rosters, and EuroLeague teams, but feature sets and controls should be understood in the context of the specific edition.

Can you rely on online features today?
No. The game overview reports that multiplayer servers shut down on December 31, 2015, affecting functions that depended on those servers. Separately, GameSpot’s 2013 review warned that a patch at the time made My Career and NBA Today internet-dependent. The review describes that patch-era behavior; it is not a guarantee about what will work on a particular present-day console, copy, or installation. Treat server-dependent features as unavailable or uncertain rather than as a reason to purchase.

Is NBA 2K14 worth looking for?
For someone seeking an older basketball game to play, the review record makes NBA 2K14 most appealing for its on-court simulation, tactical play, presentation, and career story framing. It is a less compelling choice if the priority is a major leap over NBA 2K13, progression tied closely to performance, or online modes that can be counted on today.
Match the copy to the hardware you actually own: a PS3 disc is not a substitute for a PS4 or Xbox One edition. Used-copy availability, condition, and current price are not established here, so check those details with the seller before buying. Compare editions on platform, mode availability, controls, and offline usability—not only on a single review score.
