PS4 error NP-31866-4 means there is an issue with saved data in online storage, according to PlayStation Support. It points to the console’s cloud-save service—not, by itself, a failed hard drive or other hardware fault. Check your PlayStation Plus eligibility and cloud-storage limits, then work through Sony’s recommended account and console steps.
What NP-31866-4 means
Sony describes NP-31866-4 as “There was an issue with saved data in online storage.” On PS4, online storage is the PlayStation Plus cloud-save feature. Sony says a PlayStation Plus subscription is required to use it. The code does not establish that a local save is damaged or that the console has a hardware problem.
How to fix NP-31866-4
Follow Sony’s checks in order. The support page does not identify one guaranteed cause or promise that a specific step will resolve the error.
- Check your PlayStation Plus subscription. Sign in to PlayStation Store, select your account avatar, then open Subscriptions Management. Confirm that PlayStation Plus is active.
- Restart the PS4. Restart the console, then try the online-storage action again.
- Check your cloud-storage limits. Sony’s PS4 limit is 100 GB and no more than 1,000 saved-data files in online storage. If either limit is exceeded, make room before trying again.
- Sign out and back in. On the PS4, go to Settings > Account Management, sign out, then sign in again.
- Activate the console as your primary PS4. Go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 and follow the on-screen instructions.
If the error remains after these checks, contact PlayStation Support. Sony’s code-specific guidance does not recommend a factory reset or buying replacement hardware as a remedy.

Upload, download, and manage PS4 cloud saves
If you need to transfer a save manually, use the specific action for the direction you want. These are separate operations: uploading sends the system-storage save to online storage; downloading brings an online save to system storage.
- Upload: Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage.
- Download: Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage.
- Delete an online save: Sony provides deletion through its online-storage saved-data menu. Check which copy you are selecting before deleting; removal of the selected cloud data should not be treated as a routine troubleshooting step.
Enable automatic uploads
Automatic uploads can send saved data from your primary PS4 to online storage. To enable them, go to Settings > Power Saving Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Then go to Settings > Application Data Management > Auto-Upload and enable automatic uploads. Menu wording may vary slightly with system language or region.

When the error persists
If your subscription is active, you are within the storage limits, and the sign-in and primary-console checks have not helped, use Sony’s support page for the code. The official guidance does not publish a deeper diagnosis or a guaranteed fix, so avoid treating NP-31866-4 alone as evidence that the console needs repair.
