The new Persona 5 game is Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X), a free-to-play spin-off that launched in the West on PC and mobile in June 2025. It is not Persona 6, and it centers on a new Phantom Thieves team rather than the original Persona 5 cast.
What is Persona 5: The Phantom X?
Persona 5: The Phantom X is a spin-off in the Persona 5 subseries. Kotaku’s May 15, 2025 coverage describes a new group of Phantom Thieves led by a student code-named Wonder and accompanied by the owl mascot Lufel. The original cast is not the focus. Kotaku’s announcement coverage identifies the game and its premise.
Is this Persona 6?
No. The Phantom X is a Persona 5 spin-off, not a new mainline entry called Persona 6. It also differs from the original Persona 5: Gematsu lists that game as an ATLUS/P-Studio turn-based RPG with a worldwide release in 2017. Gematsu’s Persona 5 page covers the older, separate title.
Which platforms can you play it on?
Launch-era Western coverage lists PC and mobile. Steam was the named PC storefront, while Apple App Store and Google Play were the named mobile storefronts. ComicBook.com reported the Western arrival as June 25, 2025; Kotaku reported June 26, 2025 for the PC and mobile release. Those reports differ by one day and do not explain why, so the exact launch date is best treated as reported rather than definitive. ComicBook.com’s launch report lists the storefronts.

These sources establish launch platforms, not current regional availability, supported languages, service status, or whether platform support has changed since launch. Check the relevant storefront in your region for current listing information.
How does its free-to-play model work?
Launch coverage describes The Phantom X as free-to-play with gacha mechanics. Kotaku also reported that some social-simulation and dungeon activities involve waiting or spending currency to restore energy. That is a description of launch-era mechanics, not confirmation that the current game works the same way. Kotaku’s report discusses those systems.

Does “going huge” mean it is a hit?
The available launch reports support a Western release across PC and mobile; they do not establish that The Phantom X is “going huge” in sales, downloads, or active players. No numerical success claim for the spin-off is supported by those reports.
ATLUS’s broader Persona 5 series surpassed 10 million units worldwide, according to an announcement relayed by Gematsu, but that figure is for the series, not The Phantom X. Gematsu’s franchise page does not show a publication year for that specific announcement in the cited excerpt, so it should not be read as a current sales tally for P5X. Gematsu’s franchise page distinguishes the series information from the individual game listing.
