PS5 Pro’s Upgraded PSSR Is Already Announced: What the Leak Gets Right

Sony’s PS5 Pro PSSR upgrade is already announced, but claims of a huge visual leap and lower resource use have not been independently confirmed or quantified.

Sony has already announced an upgraded PSSR upscaler for PS5 Pro, with a rollout beginning in March 2026. A Reddit leak’s claims of a “huge” image-quality jump and lower resource use remain unverified: Sony confirms a changed network and algorithm, but has not published comparative performance or resource-use figures.

What the PSSR2 leak claims—and what Sony has confirmed

The Reddit discussion framed the alleged change as more than a minor “0.5 upgrade,” claiming a major image-quality improvement and reduced resource usage. That is community wording, not Sony’s description, and the discussion establishes that the claim circulated rather than proving its technical details: the Reddit thread.

Sony announced an upgraded PSSR version on February 27, 2026. It said the update takes a “very different approach” to the neural network and overall algorithm, and named Resident Evil Requiem as the first game to use it. Sony tied the work to Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD. The announcement does not verify the leak’s specific “Multi-Frame Super Resolution 2” mechanism or its assertion of lower memory or GPU use: Sony’s announcement.

Sony’s corporate strategy presentation uses the label “PSSR 2.0,” while its consumer-facing materials describe an upgraded or Enhanced PSSR. “PSSR2” is therefore a useful shorthand, but it should not be taken to mean that every detail in the leak has been confirmed: Sony’s 2026 corporate presentation.

What the upgrade may change in games

Sony describes the original PSSR as a machine-learning upscaling library. As PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny put it, “PSSR is an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” Sony says the newer version changes both the network and the algorithm, but has not published a universal image-quality score or a technical breakdown that confirms the leak’s named mechanism.

In its March 16 rollout announcement, Sony shared developers’ observations of improved image quality, stability, motion clarity and detail, as well as changes to flicker behavior in specific games. These comments are developers describing their own titles, not standardized, independent comparisons across games. The post includes perspectives from developers at BioWare, Remedy Entertainment, Ninja Theory and Square Enix: Sony’s rollout post and developer comments.

Those reported benefits are worth distinguishing by what a player might actually notice:

  • Fine detail: whether reconstructed edges and small objects look clearer or more consistent.
  • Stability over time: whether fine detail shimmers, flickers or leaves afterimages as the camera or scene changes.
  • Motion clarity: whether moving objects remain legible rather than breaking up or appearing unstable.
  • Frame-rate behavior: whether the game’s performance changes in the particular title and mode. Sony has not published a general frame-time or resource-use reduction for the upgrade.

Why there is no confirmed “lower resource usage” figure

Sony’s cited announcements do not give a percentage reduction in GPU use, memory use or frame time. They also do not establish that the update will reduce resource demands in every supported game. Without comparable measurements for the same game, mode and scene, the leak’s lower-resource claim should be treated as an allegation rather than a confirmed PS5 Pro benefit.

Likewise, Sony’s qualitative reports of better visuals do not amount to a quantified or universal “huge” improvement. The company says results vary by title; the practical difference depends on a game’s implementation and the scenes or modes being compared.

How to use Enhanced PSSR on PS5 Pro

Sony’s PS5 Pro product page describes an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for supported games. It says the option can provide enhanced image stability even in titles designed for original PSSR and cautions that results vary by title. Sony also maintains a list of supported games on its PS5 Pro product page.

  1. Check Sony’s PS5 Pro page to see whether the game is listed as supporting the feature.
  2. On PS5 Pro, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and look for Enhance PSSR Image Quality.
  3. Enable the option for supported games, then assess the result in that game. Visual outcomes can differ from title to title.

Sony’s February 2026 announcement said more than 50 PS5 Pro titles had used PSSR to boost effective resolution “to date.” That is the figure Sony reported on February 27, 2026—not a current total.

Do not confuse PS5 Pro PSSR with base-PS5 QSSR

Sony announced QSSR, a separate streamlined upscaling feature for the base PS5, in October 2026. It is not the upgraded PSSR feature for PS5 Pro: Sony’s QSSR announcement.

The upgrade discussed here is software for PS5 Pro owners; it is not a reason existing Pro owners need to buy new hardware. Sony’s 2024 launch announcement describes the console as shipping with a 2TB SSD and DualSense controller, but its launch pricing is historical and is not a statement of current price: Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement.
