New PS6 Rumor Is Great News for Physical Collectors—But It’s Not a Sony Promise

Sony’s disc-production change preserves pre-January 2028 releases, but PS6 disc support remains unconfirmed. Here’s what the rumor means for collectors.

Sony says it will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, but it has not confirmed whether PS6 will include a disc drive or play existing PS4 and PS5 discs. The collector-friendly part is narrower: Sony says the change will not affect games released, or due to release, on disc before that cutoff. The PS6 angle comes from an analyst forecast, not an announced console feature.

What Sony actually announced

In a July 1, 2026 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment said production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. After that, new games will be available through PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats. Sony’s announcement also draws a clear line around games already released, or scheduled for release before January 2028, in disc format: “This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”

That is good news for collectors in one specific sense: Sony’s stated production change does not cancel or invalidate those pre-cutoff disc releases. It is not a promise that a future PlayStation console will read them. The announcement discusses disc production, not PS6 hardware or backward compatibility.

Why the rumor points collectors toward PS6

On July 2, 2026, TechRadar reported a forecast from Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst at Ampere Analysis. He believes the shift makes a PS6 launch before 2028 unlikely, describing late 2028 as the current expectation. He also predicted that a standard PS6 might omit an internal disc drive, while an add-on drive for older PS4 and PS5 games could be possible.

Harding-Rolls told TechRadar, “We believe this almost certainly guarantees that the PS6 won’t arrive until 2028 at the earliest.” That is his analysis of Sony’s announcement, not a Sony launch-date commitment. The same distinction applies to the drive prediction: no PS6 configuration, detachable drive, or disc compatibility was confirmed in Sony’s cited statement. Read TechRadar’s report.

What the sales mix says—and what it doesn’t

TechCrunch reported that Sony’s FY2025 Q4 results put digital downloads at 85% and physical copies at 15% of full-game software sales on PS4 and PS5. Those figures describe the sales mix for that category and those platforms in the reported period; they are not a survey of what players prefer, nor a measure of how many collectors own discs. • Console exclusive features - A new achievement and trophy system as well as optional cheats that give new reasons to revisit fazbear entertainment

The figures help explain why a move toward digital distribution may be commercially plausible, but they cannot tell collectors whether Sony will offer a disc-reading PS6. Sales share and future hardware support are different questions.

Will PS6 play your physical PS4 or PS5 games?

There is no answer established by the cited announcement. Sony has not confirmed in it whether PS6 will play PS4 or PS5 discs, whether a standard model will have an internal drive, or whether an optional external drive will be sold. Those remain open questions; Harding-Rolls’s suggested add-on drive is a possibility he raised, not a product announcement.

Collectors should therefore separate two things: the continued status of discs released before January 2028, which Sony addressed, and their compatibility with an unannounced future console, which the announcement does not settle. Keeping or organizing an existing collection—for example, in a video game disc storage case—does not guarantee that a future console will support those discs.

What physical collectors can take from the news

  • Pre-cutoff disc releases are not part of the announced production stop. Sony explicitly says its transition does not affect games already released or due before January 2028 in disc format.
  • PS6 disc support is still unconfirmed. The possible drive omission and accessory-drive scenario are analyst predictions, not official specifications.
  • The digital-sales figure has a limited scope. It covers full-game software sales on PS4 and PS5 in Sony’s FY2025 Q4 results as reported by TechCrunch; it does not establish collector sentiment.

So the rumor offers physical collectors a reason to hope Sony will preserve some path for existing libraries, but not grounds to assume one. The concrete reassurance is about which games Sony’s 2028 disc-production change affects—not what PS6 will play.
