Use different Hatchet setups for PvE and PvP. In PvE, it is a straightforward single-target damage weapon that can leave pack-clearing to its partner. In PvP, the stronger starting point in specialist guide advice is Hatchet as a secondary for survival, movement, and control—not as a build to copy unchanged from PvE. The skill and attribute examples below are dated guidance, not a guarantee of the current meta.
Why PvE and PvP Hatchet builds differ
Hatchet’s PvE role is sustained pressure on a priority target, especially a boss. Its partner can cover area damage, grouping, or encounter-specific needs. Icy Veins describes Hatchet as easy to play, high in single-target damage, and durable; its example pairings include Hatchet/Great Axe, Spear/Hatchet, and Greatsword/Hatchet. These are guide examples, not a verified ranking. Icy Veins’ Hatchet guide
For PvP, the same guide frames Hatchet primarily as defensive utility: survivability, movement, and single-target control that lets the other weapon supply damage or initiate a fight. The partner determines whether Hatchet needs to help close distance, disrupt a target, add ranged pressure, or support a healing setup. Icy Veins’ Hatchet PvP guide
PvE: build around the target and let the partner cover packs
Hatchet and Great Axe
This is a clear division of labor: Hatchet pressures bosses and other single targets, while Great Axe can gather enemies and handle area damage against trash. The Icy Veins example lists Berserk, Raging Torrent, and Rending Throw for Hatchet, paired with Reap, Maelstrom, and Gravity Well on Great Axe. Treat this as a representative skill selection; check the current mastery tree before investing points. Icy Veins’ Hatchet PvE guide

Spear and Hatchet
Spear/Hatchet is another guide-listed damage pairing. The guide describes the Spear side as bringing control and debuffs, including Rend and damage-over-time options, while Hatchet contributes damage. Its Hatchet options include Feral Rush, Berserk, and Social Distancing. Choose this pairing when those complementary effects suit your encounter rather than assuming it is universally stronger than Great Axe.
Greatsword and Hatchet
Greatsword/Hatchet offers flexibility: either weapon can be the main damage source, with Hatchet available for burst opportunities and survivability. Decide which weapon is doing the primary work in your encounter; the weapon pair alone does not establish a complete skill, attribute, or gear prescription.

PvP: treat Hatchet as a utility secondary
For PvP, a representative melee selection is Feral Rush, Berserk, and Social Distancing. Icy Veins characterizes Feral Rush as a frequent PvP option for mobility, control, and burst, while noting that it is often unnecessary in PvE. Its ability guide describes a leap with two strikes and a back-hit root upgrade; because that page is dated October 2024, verify the current ability and upgrade wording in game. Icy Veins’ Hatchet abilities guide
Pairings in the guide include Greatsword dive assassin, Sword and Shield backline assassin, Spear dive, Bow/Hatchet, and a Life Staff healing context. The skill choice follows the partner’s job:

- Gap-close or burst: Feral Rush can add movement and pressure to a melee pairing.
- Control: retain Hatchet options that help disrupt a target when the partner’s role benefits from it.
- Ranged pressure: the Bow/Hatchet example may use Infected Throw instead of Feral Rush.
- Healing survival: a Life Staff pairing puts more emphasis on staying alive than on treating Hatchet as the primary damage plan.
The PvP guide lists light or medium armor for some dive builds, not a universal best weight. Choose within the constraints of the specific build and your own survival needs; the available guide evidence does not establish one armor weight for every Hatchet setup.
Attributes, balance, and what the dated numbers mean
Fextralife’s video description, published October 17, 2024, says Hatchet scales with Strength and Dexterity, gives Strength roughly a 2:1 emphasis, and recommends prioritizing Strength early when using a Strength-based weapon setup. That is approximate creator guidance from 2024—not an official threshold or a current attribute spread. Verify present-day scaling and point breakpoints in the game’s tooltips before committing attributes. Fextralife’s 2024 Hatchet guide video

Amazon Games’ Season of the Divide release notes list a 6.3% increase to Hatchet PvE base damage. The notes say the listed values remained unchanged in PvP except where separately called out. This is a specific seasonal balance change, not a statement of Hatchet’s relative performance in October 2026 or later. Amazon Games’ Season of the Divide notes

Optional platform note: controller support
Amazon Games documented native controller support. A specialist PvP guide also notes that console auto-tracking may help with aiming Hatchet light and heavy attacks; this does not establish a general competitive advantage or a particular controller recommendation. The official Season 5 notes described Aim Assist and Enemy Target Lock as AI-only at that point, so do not assume those features apply in PvP. Use a practical build check before committing
- Choose the mode and job. For PvE, decide whether Hatchet is your boss weapon and what the partner contributes to packs or the encounter. For PvP, identify the partner’s damage, engagement, control, ranged, or healing role.
- Select skills for that job. Use the PvE or PvP examples above as starting points, then confirm each ability and mastery upgrade in the current in-game tree.
- Check live mode-specific tooltips. Review the game-mode menu and weapon mastery tooltips for current PvE and PvP values rather than carrying a historical patch number into a present-day damage claim.
- Set attributes from current scaling. Treat the 2024 Strength emphasis as historical guidance; confirm current scaling and thresholds in game.
- Adjust for your build and platform. Some PvP guide examples offer light or medium armor; neither is established as universally best. Controller support is optional and does not replace a skill or role decision.
The sources cited here have different ages: Icy Veins’ overview and perk pages were updated August 4, 2025, while its PvE, PvP, and ability guides date to October 2024, with a PvP perk update in November 2024. They provide useful build logic, but not a live October 2026 meta snapshot.
