Start with spoiler-light clues below, then reveal the four reported answer groups when you’re ready.
Hints for Connections #923
Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The guides describing this puzzle say groups are color-coded by difficulty and that players have a limited number of mistakes; Yahoo Tech specifies four guesses. TechRadar describes the game as playable for free on the NYT Games site. These are descriptions from secondary guides, not independently verified official rules.
- One group contains things used to hold or store items.
- One group consists of services you might request for laundry.
- One group is British bands formed in the 1970s; each name takes “The” before it.
- For the last group, put “Rock” before each answer word to make a familiar phrase.
Connections #923 answers
Spoilers below. The answer-guide solutions reported by Parade, Forbes, and Yahoo Tech agree on these four groups:
Yellow: Containers
BUCKET, CAN, DRUM, TIN
Green: Laundry services
DRY, FOLD, PRESS, WASH
Blue: British bands formed in the 1970s, with “The”
CLASH, CURE, DAMNED, FALL
Read each as The Clash, The Cure, The Damned, and The Fall. The grouping depends on the band names’ British origin and formation decade, not just on the words’ meanings.

#1 Best Overall
Purple: Rock ___
BOTTOM, LOBSTER, MUSIC, SALT
These complete Rock Bottom, Rock Lobster, Rock Music, and Rock Salt.
Why the board can mislead
DRUM can suggest music, but it belongs with BUCKET, CAN, and TIN as a container. MUSIC belongs in the phrase-completion group because “Rock Music” fits. Likewise, the blue answers are shortened labels: add “The” to each to get the band names.
