Stop here if you still want to solve the puzzle yourself. The four categories and their tiles are below.
| Color | Category | Tiles | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | EMANATE | BRANCH, FAN, RADIATE, SPREAD | “Branch out,” “fan out,” “radiate,” and “spread” all express sending or extending outward. |
| Green | IN THE SLIGHTEST | JUST, MERELY, ONLY, SIMPLY | Each can minimize or qualify something. |
| Blue | COCKTAIL GARNISHES | CHERRY, MINT, OLIVE, TWIST | Each names a garnish used in cocktails. |
| Purple | ___FOUR | CONNECT, FAB, FANTASTIC, PETIT | Each completes a phrase ending in “Four”: Connect Four, Fab Four, Fantastic Four, and petit four. |
Why the tricky tiles fit
FAN and SPREAD are read as verbs
Both may first look like nouns, but the yellow group uses verbal meanings: “fan out” and “spread” join “branch out” and “radiate” as ways of extending outward.
PETIT belongs with FOUR
PETIT may suggest “small” and seem to fit the minimizing words. The intended connection is the phrase “petit four,” so it belongs with CONNECT, FAB, and FANTASTIC.

The New York Times describes Connections as a puzzle in which players sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared connection. Categories are color-coded from yellow, the easiest, through green and blue to purple, the trickiest. NYT says each puzzle has one solution and is designed so that words can appear to fit more than one group. NYT Games
The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. NYT says it can be played without registering or signing in on its listed platforms; signing in allows progress to carry across devices or platforms. The help page says the archive, which begins with June 12, 2023, is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archive play affects game statistics but not streaks, and a completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed. NYT Help Center: Connections
