Hints for Connections #799
Try the nudges in order. Each points toward a category without giving away its four tiles.
- Yellow: A good hint.
- Green: Seize the moment.
- Blue: Think about what a hotel might offer.
- Purple: A small clock.
These are published guide clues, not official NYT category hints. TechRadar’s August 17 guide used the phrases above; Parade’s August 18 guide offered similar nudges: “To show something,” “When you get one, take it,” “Think Marriott or Radisson,” and “Timepiece.” TechRadar Parade

Game #799’s 16 tiles sort into these four groups:
#1 Best Overall
- INDICATION: CUE, NOD, PROMPT, SIGNAL
- OPPORTUNITY: BREAK, CHANCE, OPENING, SHOT
- HOTEL AMENITIES: BREAKFAST, PARKING, POOL, WI-FI
- WORDS BEFORE “WATCH”: DIGITAL, POCKET, STOP, WRIST
TechRadar, Parade, and Forbes independently reported the same categories and sets. The tile is PROMPT; one source page printed it as “PROMT,” apparently in error. Forbes
Why the word groups can mislead
A tempting decoy is a billiards set: CUE, POCKET, BREAK, and SHOT all seem to fit. But the intended solution splits those words across three categories: CUE belongs with indications, BREAK and SHOT with opportunities, and POCKET with words before “watch.” POOL, meanwhile, is a hotel amenity. TechRadar’s guide describes considering the billiards grouping, while Forbes notes that POOL can make it look like a red herring; that is a solving observation, not an official hint.

The puzzle’s trick is that familiar words point in more than one direction. BREAK can mean an opportunity, while STOP completes “stopwatch”; SHOT fits the opportunity group rather than the billiards decoy. When a plausible cluster forms, check whether the remaining words support a cleaner alternative before committing.

Forbes describes Connections as a daily NYT word game in which players sort 16 words into four groups of four. It reports color-coded difficulty, a shuffle option, and a four-error limit. The game is available on the NYT website or Games app; Forbes also says NYT Games or All Access subscribers can access the Connections archive. These details are reported by Forbes, rather than drawn from an official rules page. Forbes
