Before you set out in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, learn how its redesigned leveling works, keep your weight under control, and make more than one save. Those habits help you explore Cyrodiil without letting a missed level-up, blocked fast travel, or a bad turn in a quest derail your progress.

1. Keep several save files

Save before entering a new area or starting a quest objective, and keep multiple saves rather than relying on a single file. Bethesda recommends frequent saves so you can return to an earlier point if a fight, dialogue choice, or quest goes wrong. On PC, the default quicksave key is F5; bindings can be changed. Xbox defaults do not assign a quicksave button, so check the controls menu for a routine that works for you.

2. Understand how leveling works in the remaster

Using skills builds experience, but it does not immediately complete a level. When the game indicates that a level is ready, sleep to apply it. If you keep adventuring without sleeping, you can continue using skills, but the level-up itself remains pending.

Skill growth affects the challenge

Bethesda Support says enemies scale with your character level. That makes it worth developing the skills you actually use to survive, not just advancing convenient non-combat skills. If your character levels quickly through activities such as running while combat skills lag behind, encounters may become harder relative to your fighting ability.

  • Create your own way from the noble warrior to the sinister assassin to the wrinkled wizard or funny blacksmith and play in your way.

3. Choose attribute increases to suit your character

At each level, the remaster grants 12 virtue points. You can put up to five points into an attribute, and increase no more than three attributes per level. Consider what your character needs next—such as stronger combat capability or more carrying capacity—before confirming the increases, rather than treating every level as an automatic, identical upgrade.

4. Check carry weight before relying on fast travel

Being over-encumbered prevents fast travel. Bethesda Support gives carry capacity as five times Strength, and notes that armor perks and Feather or Fortify Strength effects can change how much you can carry. Before setting out for a distant destination, check your inventory and leave behind items you do not need if your weight is close to the limit.

5. Turn travel into skill practice

Exploring on foot can develop Athletics and Acrobatics: running builds Athletics, while jumping builds Acrobatics. Bethesda’s beginner guide quotes Alexandre Lecomte, Lead Software Engineer at Virtuos: “Explore the world and raise your skills!” The remaster also adds sprinting, so use movement naturally as you travel rather than treating every journey as dead time.

6. Use a horse for longer journeys

For faster cross-country travel, horses can be purchased at stables outside major cities. Bethesda notes an exception: the Imperial City does not have a stable where you can buy one. A horse is a useful option when you want to cover distance without making the entire trip on foot.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered - Deluxe Edition | Xbox Series X|S & Windows Digital
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered modernizes the 2006 Game of the Year with all new stunning visuals and refined gameplay.
  • Explore the vast landscape of Cyrodiil like never before and stop the forces of Oblivion from overtaking the land in one of the greatest RPGs ever from the award-winning Bethesda Game Studios.
  • Rediscover Cyrodiil Journey through the rich world of Tamriel and battle across the planes of Oblivion where handcrafted details have been meticulously recreated to ensure each moment of exploration is awe-inspiring.
  • Navigate Your Own Story. From the noble warrior to the sinister assassin, wizened sorcerer, or scrappy blacksmith, forge your path and play the way you want.
  • An Epic Adventure. Step inside a universe bursting with captivating stories and encounter an unforgettable cast of characters. Master swordcraft and wield powerful magic as you fight to save Tamriel from the Daedric invasion.

7. Set up HUD Shortcuts before a fight

HUD Shortcuts do not pause gameplay. Assign frequently used items or abilities before combat or another dangerous moment, so you are not trying to make a selection while enemies are still acting. The shortcut interface is convenient, but it is not a safe pause menu.

8. Look for a missing NPC at another time or place

NPC schedules can vary by time of day, so a character who is not where you expect may have moved as part of their routine. If Clairvoyance is not leading you to a quest target, Bethesda Support suggests revisiting the quest’s last location. Check the area at another time before assuming the quest has broken.

9. Learn your platform’s controls early

Controls differ by platform and can be customized, so check the in-game controls menu rather than assuming another player’s bindings match yours. Bethesda’s listed defaults include these PC controls:

Action PC default
Quest screen F6
Quicksave F5

Xbox defaults do not assign a button for the quest screen or quicksave. Choose a comfortable save habit and learn how to reach your quest information on your own setup; players on other platforms should check their controls as well.

10. Explore broadly, but keep your build in balance

Cyrodiil rewards exploration, and trying different activities helps you discover which skills fit your play style. Keep an eye on the level indicator as you do so: because enemies scale with character level, developing combat and survival skills alongside movement or other utility skills helps prevent your character from advancing faster than their ability to handle encounters.
