The first announcement showed the hardware and set a 2025 release window, but did not give a price or final specifications. Nintendo later announced a June 5, 2025 launch; Switch 2 is now a released console, not an upcoming one.
What Nintendo announced on January 16, 2025
Nintendo’s first Switch 2 announcement confirmed the name, showed the system in a hardware video and identified it as the successor to the original Nintendo Switch. The company said it would launch in 2025 and scheduled a Nintendo Direct for April 2, 2025, when it would share more details. Nintendo’s January 16 announcement also cautioned that some Nintendo Switch games might not be supported or might not be fully compatible with the new system.

That distinction matters: the reveal established the console’s identity and successor role, not that every existing game or accessory would carry over. Its specific launch details came later.
When did Switch 2 launch, and what did it cost?
Nintendo announced on April 2, 2025 that Switch 2 would launch on June 5, 2025. Prices varied by market and bundle. In the United States, Nintendo of America listed a suggested retail price of $449.99 for the system and $499.99 for a Mario Kart World bundle. Those are historical U.S. launch prices, not current prices or an indication of present availability. Nintendo of America’s launch announcement gives the U.S. details.

For Japan, Nintendo listed the Japanese-language system at ¥49,980 and a multi-language system at ¥69,980 in its April 2 announcement. The Japan-only model has regional and language restrictions, so those prices should not be treated as interchangeable options for buyers in other markets. Nintendo’s Japanese-market release describes those models.
What changed from the first-look reveal to the released console?
The first video was a reveal, not a full specification sheet. In its U.S. launch announcement, Nintendo described Switch 2 as having a 7.9-inch LCD with 1080p resolution, 256 GB of internal storage, and magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers that can function as a mouse in compatible games. When docked, it can output up to 4K resolution and 120 frames per second when supported by the game and television. These are manufacturer specifications and conditional capabilities, not independent performance-test results. Nintendo of America’s launch announcement provides the stated hardware details.

Will original Nintendo Switch games and accessories work?
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. Nintendo warned about possible unsupported or partially compatible titles in the original reveal and provides an operational compatibility reference for games and accessories. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance for the particular game or accessory before relying on it; the console’s successor status alone does not guarantee support.
What storage cards does Switch 2 use?
Nintendo specifies microSD Express cards for additional game storage on Switch 2. A conventional microSD card cannot be used to store games on the console. Nintendo’s support guidance says conventional microSD cards can still be used to view captured screenshots and videos from a Nintendo Switch, a narrower use that should not be confused with game-storage compatibility. See Nintendo’s compatibility and storage guidance for the current details.
