How to unlock “Off the Pilfered Path”
Complete “Mercy Among Thieves” first. PowerPyx also lists “Nation of Lambent Flame” as a requirement, while GamesRadar ties the quest to “Mercy Among Thieves.” Since walkthroughs differ in how they describe the prerequisite sequence, complete both if the quest does not appear after “Mercy Among Thieves.”

Find Hugo and learn where the Coral Snakes went
- Go to Bakbattahl Gaol. PowerPyx directs players past the Dye Stores to the gaol entrance; GamesRadar places the gaol on the northeast side of town.
- Speak with Hugo in his cell, then talk to Brefft, the nearby prisoner. Exhaust Brefft’s dialogue; PowerPyx says to speak with him at least twice.
- Return to Hugo after hearing Brefft’s account. Brefft reveals the truth about Hugo’s parents and points to the Coral Snakes’ hideout at the Ancient Battleground.
Stop the Coral Snakes branch from ending badly
The Coral Snakes’ new hideout is at the Ancient Battleground, north of Checkpoint Rest Town, according to PowerPyx. This branch is consequential: walkthroughs warn that Hugo can die if events advance too far or he confronts Lanzo without your intervention. PowerPyx describes clearing out the Coral Snakes before Hugo gets there as a way to prevent his death; GamesRadar reports a late outcome in which both Hugo and Lanzo die.
Do not treat this as a quest with a confirmed, precise countdown. The guides describe arrival and intervention outcomes differently, but agree that delaying or allowing the confrontation can cost Hugo his life. If you want him to survive, travel to the hideout and resolve the Coral Snakes situation before letting that branch play out.

Get Hugo released and find him work
After learning the truth, return to the gaol and speak with Ekertt about Hugo’s release. PowerPyx describes arranging it through staged payments. Once Hugo is free, speak with him to discuss work; which employer is available depends on your progress and decisions in other quests.

What happens if you reach the Unmoored World first?
PowerPyx reports that in the Unmoored World, Hugo can set off on his own and complete the quest if you could not meet another job-suggestion requirement. That is a reported late-completion route, not a substitute for preventing the Ancient Battleground branch from turning fatal when you want Hugo to survive.

PowerPyx lists 7,000 G and a White-Leather Kerchief for its described completion outcome. GamesRadar reports additional experience and equipment for a surviving-Hugo outcome. These are branch-sensitive rewards from walkthroughs, not a single guaranteed combined payout; the available evidence does not establish one universal reward list for every quest state.
