To beat the Arena in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, follow the rank bouts in order, wear the Arena Battle Raiment for ordinary matches, and save before entering and between rounds. Group fights are easier to manage when you keep moving and use the strongest reliable tools in your build. If combat itself is the obstacle, Update 1.2 added separate settings for player and enemy combat damage.
Before you enter the Arena
Find the Arena in the Imperial City and speak with its staff to begin. For ordinary bouts, equip the Arena Battle Raiment; Game8 says you can bring your own weapon, shield, and helmet. The guide lists the competition window as 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Grand Champion matches are exceptions to the standard time and equipment rules. Game8’s Arena guide
- Bring the weapon, shield, and helmet that fit your character, but keep the required raiment equipped for standard matches.
- Make a save before entering the Arena area, then save again between rounds. Bethesda recommends both precautions because progression problems can occur. Bethesda Support: Arena quest progression issues
How Arena ranks and matches work
Game8 says each rank before Champion and Grand Champion requires three matches. After a win, return to the Arena staff and use the available promotion dialogue to continue. The available guide does not establish a verified full roster of opponents, their stats, or every reward, so use the in-game progression rather than relying on unsourced encounter tables. How to approach ordinary fights
There is no source-supported universally best build or combat script. Match your approach to your character: a melee fighter can rely on blocking and controlled attacks, while ranged or magic-focused characters can use distance and their trained skills. These are general tactics, not guaranteed encounter solutions.

GamesRadar recounts one player using Hand-to-Hand power attacks to disarm opponents. It is a reported tactic that may suit a character with the right skill, not a promise that it will work for every build or difficulty. GamesRadar’s account of the tactic
How to handle the Three Argonian Prisoners and other group fights
When several enemies attack at once, avoid letting them surround you: keep moving, create space, and use the damage or control options your character can apply reliably. This is general tactical advice, not a verified step-by-step solution for every build. The GamesRadar Hand-to-Hand disarm approach is one possible option for characters suited to it; the available sources do not establish a best target order, exact damage thresholds, or encounter health totals. Before you challenge the Gray Prince
If you want to resolve Agronak gro-Malog’s personal story before the fight, speak with him and complete the optional “Origin of the Gray Prince” quest before challenging him. Game8 recommends doing this first. After victory, it reports that Ysabel offers a choice between heavy and light Raiment of Valor. Game8’s Arena guide
Why you can’t progress in the Arena
Bethesda Support says the game may fail to recognize the required time or equipped raiment. If the next bout will not start, try these recovery steps in order; save first if possible.
